Toddler Temper Tantrums Print E-mail
What's the best way to handle my toddler daughter's temper tantrums?

It worked for me:

The best advice is to just walk away if you are at home. My 15-month-old started throwing tantrums but it lasted no more then a week. We just flat out ignored him.

- T. Dunagan in Vista, CA

Be very positive in your approach to the child. Highlight the ill effects of a wrong action and try mending the child's attitude with immense love and care. Effective parenting is a skill one must develop for getting the best out of the child, and of course, it takes a lot of patience.

If there aren't any tears, I just ignore my granddaughter. I can see that she is watching to see if I'm looking at her. If she is too loud, then I just pick her up, tell her "no" in a firm voice and redirect her attention some place else.

- Wanda Sewell-Robinson in Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada

Stay calm. I look at my daughter and say, "That's very nice. Do you really think that it'll work?" I usually have to suppress a smile. But, if I wait it out and don't give in, it seems to pay off in the end. I always wait until she can tell me her desires in a calm manner.

We have found massages help to stop tantrums. Start the day with your toddler with some basic body massages and make it fun. Massage the back, legs, arms and hands. Talk to them while your massaging and don't forget the all-important feet. Before going to bed, do the same thing. You will find this leads to a happier, healthier baby/infant/toddler with fewer tantrums!

As long as there is nothing that your child can hurt herself on, walk away and go into another room. Most kids don't like being ignored and will stop once they see that the tantrum isn't getting the attention that they want.

- R. Peltier in Gillette, WY

From Jodie:

For the most part, don't try to reason with her until she is over this toddler "meltdown." Many things can trigger this type of unfavorable reaction due to simple frustration. The most common condition for frustrations is being overly tired, hungry and/or unable to communicate. This is especially true for toddlers who have recently stopped taking a scheduled nap, are right on the verge of becoming sick, are cutting teeth or have experienced a new change in their otherwise familiar surroundings.

Whether it happens often or not, try to ignore or distract her. Remember, if you "overreact," so will your toddler. Stay calm by quickly summing up the situation. Do not spank, shake or yell. Try to change the scenery by going into a different room or stepping outside. Try singing a familiar tune in a very soft voice. Distract every way you can include leaving a store or any other area if all else fails.
