ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- This week while you're traveling, if you happen to spot a man applying hand sanitizer as he gets off an escalator, there's a good chance it's Dr. Mark Gendreau, a senior staff physician at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/11/27...ing/index.html

The VA where I go provides hand santizers at all the elevators and in almost all the clinics. Since there are a high number of people there with upper respiratory illnesses, I use it liberally. I use it liberally anyway. We take a large bottle with us wherever we go. And it's working. We don't get sick that often.

I've always thought that not washing your hands after you use the restroom is like eating your own pee and poo.

agreed Lenora.

but is this another example of over the top hygene? We are losing our immunities to so many everyday bugs bc we constantly sanitise our hands. In a medical practice or hospital of course it is neccessary to prevent cross contamination between patients and also for the staff bc they are constantly exposed to germs.

For most people if we are not exposed to everyday germs we do not develop immunities, so on the one time you forget the sanatiser you catch a common germ and possibly die from lack of immunity.

It is a very fine line to tread I'm still stuck in the "Damned if I know" corner.

That's true... it becomes particularly important when spending time in public places such as airports, theme parks and other tourist attractions.

I would put not having a two year old on the top of the list of things to improve your health. We have been sick for 6 of the past 7 months, because my little lovey sticks her fingers in her mouth and licks everything. All of our family illnesses have originated with one little person. And it is an incredible fight to get her to wash her hands or use hand sanitizer. We literally have to hold her down to wash her hands. I don't remember being this sick when Kate was two and she was quite and finger sticker and licker as well.

Hand sanitizer is awesome and portable, but the best thing is to WASH YOUR HANDS PROPERLY whenever possible. But hand sanitizer is a great alternative when you cannot wash.

I think everybody is carrying their own sanitizer. It's one of my must-haves when traveling.

Thank for your post Grace and thanks for the link again. It's always a good idea to bring hand sanitizers wherever you go. You just don't when it (germs) will hit you. So one must always prepare.
