Can "appendicitus(?) go away after 3 very painful days??

Hi Kim

I got out of hospital last week after a 12 day stay, went in on wed night with DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis) 4 days after a mild (6 hrs) dose of gastro to get some help stabalising my blood sugars which were going from 32+ down to 2.1 (576 to 37.8) and back again and to get the ketones to go away. Sunday night I suddenly came down with crippling stomach pains. Great fun when they are trying to replace your drip site. I had managed to catch the gastro outbreak going on in the hospital (they had one whole ward down with it) at the same time I had an even sharper pain low on my right side heading towards my groin.

For the next 3 days I was in acute discomfort and the medical staff were insistant that it was appendacitis and the surgical staff insisting it was not. After 3 days it didn't matter who was right as the pain started to go away and by the 4th day was gone (the gastro went away 36 hrs later)

Is it possible for your appendix to get inflamed for 3 days and then settle down again? Can gastro imitate appendacitis pain? and more importantly, if yes, can the darn thing come back again?

PS: My brothers appendix burst when he was 33 he was already in hospital with the pain, and had been training for the National Rock and Roll champs which included 2 hrs a day at the gym (for the last 3 mnths), which the dr's said saved his life (Him being in superb pysical condition).

I suppose anything is possible with the right antibiotics, but I would say that appendicitis just going away, at least from what I have seen, is highly unlikely. If the pain went away, then I would venture that it was something else. When I had my appy the pain was so severe that I had trouble breathing and walking..... there is no way in haydes that I would have waited any amount of time for it to go away. Did they do an abdominal CT or any Xrays to rule out appendicitis? It is something that they should never "mess with" or ignore. A ruptured appy could be very hazardous to your health, possibly leading to peritonitis or systemic sepsis (infection). With your diabetes, you already have significant compromise, so they need to take it seriously.

I had an ultrasound, I was down for a cat scan but as they use a shellfish derived dye and I'm allergic to shellfish they decided not to put my body thru more vomiting and hives on top of the gastro.

I didn't think it could go away, so it must have been something else. I was on IV antibiotic's so whatever it was must have been killed off

My friend (who was a nurse in the navy 20 yrs ago) was saying it could be a grumbling appy (I much prefer spelling that! LOL), but as she has been an overhead crane driver for the last 20 yrs I figure she would not be up with the current medical knowledge.

Thanks for puttinog my mind at rest, the last thing I need on top of everything else is for my appendix to give up on me.

Lady, you need to take care of yourself! I worry about you! But I am glad that you are home and feeling better. That hospital trip couldn't have been any fun!
