Europe went into response mode just hours after the Haiti earthquake struck two weeks ago, scrambling to organize search and rescue teams, making aid pledges and rushing medical units to the stricken island. But even though European countries have pledged $600 million in aid so far and European teams have been involved in some of the more dramatic rescues of survivors trapped beneath the rubble, some leaders grumble that the continent is being forced to take a back seat in the operations - exacerbating the already high anxiety over whether Europe has lost its status as a world power.
I'm sorry, but this just burns my a$$! Helping those in Haiti isn't (or shouldn't be) about which country does the most. It's about each country doing whatever they can to assist those that need it. Do you think the Haitian people give a flip where their food, medicine, clothes and blankets came from? He!! no! They are just happy to have them. And of course France is doing most of the grumbling, as usual. The US already had troops on the ground in Haiti, THAT'S why we took charge. WE WERE ALREADY THERE! We have more medical ships available to help, but those from other countries are still needed. The E.U. countries have contributed millions of dollars in aid, so why are they complaining about this? The entire world is helping, but you don't hear the rest of them whining about not being in charge or not getting the "public recognition" they think they deserve.
France, specifically, needs to get a grip and so does the E.U. in general. Help out any way you can and leave the accolades for those who deserve them - the rescue workers from all over the world. Not a country, but the individuals who have given up their personal lives to help those in need. Those are the ones who deserve recognition.

I am not surprised at this EU reaction. However, our very old treaties and laws dictate that we do not allow a foreign power to seize control of any western hemisphere nation. This policy has been in place since nearly the founding of our nation. Besides, where were they before the quake? We've been trying to help Haiti for years.
