A Expresso machine. We drink coffee but never expresso. My mil got it for us because she said it looked really nice and would like nice on the counter. And use it also. I think we used it once and now it sits on the top shelf of my pantry gathering dust.

One of my SILs got me a make-up applicator kit with the brushes and stuff for putting on make-up. I don't wear make-up. Was she maybe trying to give me a hint?

My MIL has really good taste. And most of the time, she buys really good gifts. So, I will never understand why she buys some of the things that she does. She loves the ABC and LTD catalogs. She orders from them all the time. And they do have some good stuff in there, and I have ordered a lot from them, too. But she buys the $3.95 stuff that never works right or never goes together quite right. Christmas is her big time for ordering from LTD. She buys you like 10 of those $3.95 gifts. By the time she gets you all of this stuff and then pays postage and all on it, she could have given you a really nice gift.

I think the worst was when we got married… She bought us a ton of stuff and I know it all came from there. One was this 100 pc. Storage set. None of the lids fit right. The things that were supposed to link together (like the measuring cups, etc.) didn't fit together right. And we'd already gotten some really nice high quality ones. We ended up putting them in a garage sale, and guess what… She thought they were wonderful and came and bought them. I told her she could just have them. Didn't want to take her money. Then she put them in her cabinet and forgot about them. About a year later, she handed me a bag and said, "I found something I didn't know I had. You would probably like this." Guess what it was…. Didn’t have the heart to tell her she'd already given it to me once. When we got married, she gave us a bunch of stuff that wasn't my taste at all. DH looked at it and laughed and said he thinks she bought it when he was engaged to his ex-girlfriend because it really looked like something she'd like.

When I had my baby shower, she got us this tape player that was supposed to hook to the crib railing. It had a nightlight on the side of it. Well, the tape player never worked. It turned, but it wouldn't play the music. And you can't tell her that something doesn't work or doesn't fit, because then she gets all whacky on you. So I have so much stuff that she's given me that I had to just hide or give away without her knowing, because it was junk or didn't fit, or whatever.

My poor DH.... My mom bought him the SAME THING for Christmas for the first two years we were married. Fleece jackets. Finally, the third year I told her not to buy him a fleece jacket. She asked why and I told her because she got him the same thing two yers in a row. She didn't know whether to be embarrassed or to think it was funny. DH thought it was hilarious.

Here's one of the worst reactions we ever got for a gift we gave the inlaws. My FIL loves fresh bread but of course he won't bake any and so my MIL is always baking bread. We thought a breadmaker would be the perfect gift for them. They opened it and my MIL said, sitting in our house during our family Christmas get-together, as she was pulling it out of the box "Oh No! Not a breadmaker!" in an exasperated voice as she rolled her eyes. Then she looked at Billy & I as we sat there stunned and realized what she had said and tried to tell us she didn't mean it that way, that she loved it.

We offered to buy it from them because we wanted one and to get them something else but they said no, they would use it a lot. For about a year, everytime we would go to their house she would pull out the breadmaker and tell us how she was getting ready to make some bread but hadn't gotten around to it. Since then, they only get cash for presents.

Sounds like some of ya'll have gotten some doosies!

Most of the time the in-laws are great about buying gifts for everyone. They always ask what you want and try hard to find it for you. So mine really isn't that bad.

Everytime my in-laws go somewhere, they buy t-shirts for everyone. Problems is, I rarely if ever wear t-shirts because I don't really like them. But I have a whole stack of them now! I will say some of them I like, but they are few and far between.

But the worst has to be when they went to SC to visit family about a year or so ago. BIL's wife has done alot of her house with lighthouses and such. So they got her one of these key ring things you hang by the door with lighthouses on it. I got on with a fishing net and an anchor on it!

No where in my house will you find ANYTHING like that. Except at the back door where I hung it! But it is pretty handy!

My dad got me a fondou maker for Christmas one year.

He enjoyed his so much he thought he would share the expierence. I personally thought he regifted it!

It just isn't anything that you think you would get from family. It is more bridal shower thing or wedding gift or if you specifically ask for that!

Ooh I thought of another one. Grant was born in November and I was over 200 lbs. For Christmas they gave me some pajamas - size extra-small.

Usually my MIL is really great with the gifts. But she does buy from places like LTD or ABC cataloge and not that there is anything wrong with it...just sometimes the things are not appropriate or wrong size or do not fit.

She is big into cataloge shopping and that is ok but for me you just cannot do it if it is clothes. She once bought me a denim dress..it was pretty ugly and did not fit. Which was good cause then I never had to wear it.
