The other "Taboo" subject...

I got an email about a program coming on PAX I think it is called "Faith under Fire" and they had posted some of the discussion questions that were going to be used...

So I bookmarked the page w/the questions and thought I'd pop one in this forum from time to time, if that's ok w/y'all.

So, here goes...

Do you believe religion inevitably causes conflict and wars? Why or why not? To what extent do you think evil has been done in the name of religion? Explain.

Well for example take a look at Hitler. He work was done and he was Catholic and just interpeted the wrong way. He knew the Jews were wrong about Jesus Christ and he took it upon him self to punish them.

This created parts of WWII.

Look at the fights that Isreal is going through.

Everyone thinks that their religion is the right one. If you have someone powerful enough that trys to enforse it then war and death occur.

What about David Coresh (sp) and the Branch Dividian in Waco? There is another religios war.

I got an e-mail that frightens me that I will post next in this thread. THis war frightens me that we are in now...

IRAQ - VERY INTERESTING - DID YOU KNOW?

1. The garden of Eden was in Iraq.
2. Mesopotamia, which is now Iraq, was the cradle of civilization!
3. Noah built the ark in Iraq.
4. The Tower of Babel was in Iraq.
5. Abraham was from Ur, which is in Southern Iraq!
6. Isaac's wife Rebekah is from Nahor, which is in Iraq.
7. Jacob met Rachel in Iraq.
8. Jonah preached in Nineveh - which is in Iraq.
9. Assyria, which is in Iraq, conquered the ten tribes of Israel.
10. Amos cried out in Iraq!
11. Babylon, which is in Iraq, destroyed Jerusalem.
12. Daniel was in the lion's den in Iraq!
13. The three Hebrew children were in the fire in Iraq (Jesus
had been in Iraq also as the fourth person in the fiery furnace!)
14. Belshazzar, the King of Babylon saw the "writing on the wall" in Iraq.
15. Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, carried the Jews captive into Ira q.
16. Ezekiel preached in Iraq.
17. The wise men were from Iraq.
18. Peter preached in Iraq.
19. The "Empire of Man" described in Revelation is called
Babylon, which was a city in Iraq!

And you have probably seen this one. Israel is the nation most often mentioned in the Bible. But do you know which nation is second?
It is Iraq!
However, that is not the name that is used in the Bible.
The names used in the Bible are Babylon, Land of Shinar, and Mesopotamia.
The word Mesopotamia means between the two rivers, more exactly between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. The name Iraq, means country with deep roots. Indeed Iraq is a country with deep roots and is a very significant country in the Bible. Here's why!

- Eden was in Iraq - Genesis 2:10-14
- Adam & Eve were created in Iraq - Genesis 2:7-8
- Satan made his first recorded appearance in Iraq - Genesis 3:1-6
- Nimrod established Babylon & The Tower of Babel was built in Iraq -Genesis 10:8-97; 11:1-4
- The confusion of the languages took place in Iraq - Genesis11:5-11
- Abraham came from a city in Iraq - Genesis 11:31; Acts 7:2-4
- Isaac's bride came from Iraq - Genesis 24:3-4; 10
- Jacob spent 20 year s in Iraq - Genesis 27:42-45; 31:38
- The first world Empire was in Iraq - Daniel 1:1-2;2:36-38
- The greatest revival in history was in a city in Iraq - Jonah 3
- The events of the book of Esther took place in Iraq - Esther
- The book of Nahum was a prophecy against a city in Iraq - Nahum
- The book or Revelation has prophecies against Babylon
(Iraq's former name). Revelation 17 & 18 No other nation, except Israel,
has more history and prophecy associated it than Iraq. And also...

This is something to think about! Since America is typically represented by an eagle. Saddam should have read up on his Muslim passages... The following verse is from the Koran, (the Islamic Bible)

Koran (9:11) - For it is written that a son of Arabia would awaken a fearsome Eagle. The wrath of the Eagle would be felt thro ughout the lands of Allah and lo, while some of the people trembled in despair still more rejoiced; for the wrath of the Eagle cleansed the lands of Allah; and there was peace. (Note the verse number!)

Hmmmmmmm?!
God Bless you all Amen !

I don't know that "religion" does so much as people do. And, to be fair, religion isn't the only reason people give for going to war. There are 'reasons' of race, the economy and many others.

Peoples in the Middle East use religion as an excuse for taking something that someone else (usually of a different religion) has that they themselves want - usually land.

'Christians' in the Middle Ages used 'religion' as a reason for the Crusades, which saw some of the most un-'Christian' activity the world has ever known.

Both these examples kind of cover the 2nd question too - evil that has been done in the name of 'religion'.

I believe that hundreds of thousands of humans have died fighting for their religious beliefs, but I also agree with LuAnn that many have used religion as an excuse to start wars, and in that sense evil has been done in the name of religion.

Those are hard questions. I do believe talk about religion can cause some wars in the world, conflicts that is what I mean. That is all I can say.

It's like the debate of

Guns kill people

vs

PEOPLE kill people. (Some of them just use guns.)

Some people think religion gives them a license to kill.

A lot of bad things have been done in the name of religion. Maybe I should seperate religion from the teaching of religious leaders. A lot of nasty stuff has been done in the name of Jesus, who was personally not a violent man and in fact, seemed rather opposed to violence. I think people love power. Love of power causes war.

I think that misunderstandings over relgion cause war. For example, the Middle East. Islam is not an inheritantly violent relgion. Their are individuals within the faith who are crazy and power hungry, but they are that way with or without their faith. Some people who are followers of Islam dress differently, act differently and have customs that westerners don't understand. It's not that their customs are wrong, they're just misunderstood. Sometimes I wonder if these people are fighting for their way of life - for their right to have their own culture, relgion and ideas.

I think the situation in the Middle East has a heck of a lot more to do with oil than religion. Frankly, most of the peoples living in the Sahara dessert are Muslim and most of the world could really care less about them.

Here's the funny thing about war though, war appears to make people respect and learn about others. Before all those wars in Asia during the 20th c, who knew what martial arts, saki, sushi or mu sho pork was? I think when these wars in the Middle East are over, that westerners will have a greater understanding for Middle Eastern culture and traditions. There are many beautiful things about their way of life. Eventually, maybe a long time from now, we can say "Wow! Those people are really interesting. I'd like to visit where they live and learn more about them."

it's unfortunate for modern religious institutions but the routines and the customs associated with "being religious" can be very attractive to people who are easily influenced or those who have been raised in very strict/dictatorial environments. That, in turn, can attract unscrupulous people looking to exploit those people. this is why some islamic clerics can so easily promote terrorism. They use the easily led (deceived) to do the dirty work so their own agenda can be promoted. They use the fact that their muslim followers will follow them blindly because it was the way they were raised. meanwhile, the followers think they're doing the right thing all in the name of religion.
