For Hallowe'en last year, I bought a regular chocolate cake mix, chocolate frosting, some gummy worms, oreos and chocolate covered almonds. I made the cake according to the directions, let it cool then put the icing on it. Then I put the gummy worms spread around the cake and the platter, crumbled up the cookies, and spread the almonds around it. To achieve a "maggot" look, I put the almonds in the freezer, thus making them turn white. I took a regular piece of cardboard and made a tombstone, and I traced my hand on some of the cardboard and cut it out and stuck it in the cake. It looked really neat, like a hand reaching out of a grave. My little girl thought it was the coolest thing and my friends and family thought it looked really neat, too. And the best part is, all the decorations can be eaten without having to worry about anyone getting sick. It didn't take long to do, and little people can help, too, crumbling the cookies and placing the worms and "maggots". -- Amanda, 23, from NB
One of my favorite cheap Halloween decoration is to make ghosts and spiders with garbage bags. Ghosts are made with white garbarge bags: put a paper plate in the bottom and tie it at the "neck" to make the face. Draw eyes and mouth on the face. Hang outside for the wind to help your ghosts "fly"! Spiders are made with black garbage bags: Fill one with old crumpled up newspaper and tie closed for the body. Cut eight legs from another and spread them out from under the body. Makes a great big yard spider! These are both great outdoor decorations because they are really cute but cheap enough that it's not a big deal if they get messed up or stolen. -- Melany, 43, from NV
