Favorite Costume
My 7-year-old's favorite costume so far has been a spider. I just had him wear black sweats that he already had in his possession (the shirt had a design on it so we turned it inside out). Then I bought a $1 pack of six black knee highs from the dollar store and stuffed them. I pinned one long piece of black yarn to the end of each stuffed hose with about a 6" to 8" strand between each hose connecting them together. I pinned the other end of the hose to the outfit. When he raised his arms, the panty hose flopped up and down because of the yarn. You can also use a black sock hat for his head, but my son didn't like hats so we didn't bother.

We Made Our Own
My most memorable Halloween as a child was the year that my mom let us make our own costumes. I was a Rubik's cube, and my brother was a Pac-Man game. (This was the early 1980s, but the idea could be adapted to more modern games.)
She brought home large cardboard boxes from the grocery store, and cut out a head hole, leg holes, and arm holes in each of the boxes. She drew on the outline of each costume in pencil, and let us paint the rest. It was so much fun, and we'll never forget it.

Halloween Costumes
One year, I donned a trench coat, a wig (obtained from a thrift store), sunglasses, and a cardboard sign around my neck that said "Bless You." I was a "Blessing in Disguise."
Another time, I bought about a yard of white felt and made a big moon. I left an opening on the inside of the crescent that was large enough for my daughter's face and a bigger opening opposite. I stuffed the moon with netting, but plastic bags would work. I then painted her face white and dressed her in all white. She was the "Man in the Moon" and won first prize.
I made a big sandwich board clock face and attached hands with a brad. I put baby powder in my son's hair to make it white and he wore a fake fur white beard. He walked with a cane. He was a "Grandfather Clock" or "Father Time."
