Constipation in babies

Ugh - with all my questions lately, one would think I was a first time mom.
It's just odd to me how different Delaney is from Kyler!! It's like I'm starting all over at times.

Anyways...
Her dr and the books I've read said that she "can't" be constipated because I'm nursing.
Well, she's always straining pretty hard when she's trying to go.
Now, since she's been born, she usually poop's 5-6 times a day. No joke.

Well, today is the 2nd day that she hasn't had a bowel movement... and she's straining... and crying...

I called the dr. The told me to give her 4 oz of warm water with Karo (sp?) syrup. I tried - she drank an oz - didn't really care for it. But nothing happened.

The drs and nurses are telling me that this is normal.
KYLER NEVER DID THIS!
Ugh!
I feel so bad for her.

Anyone have any tips on what I can do to help her?? do you really think this is normal or should I be getting more concerned?

I would try and get her to drink the rest of the karo syrup and water. Maybe you could put it in a bottle with milk instead??

i hope you can get the rest of the water into her... i bet that will help!

You might also try about 1/2 oz of prune juice - dilute it slightly. It always helped Jared !

Yeah prune juice works really well...jus tdon't get in the habit of it, and make sure to dilute it, too!

Prune juice and apple juice is what my Ped recommended. Poor baby!

Shari, both my girls were born with constipation! Water and brown sugar always did the trick for Sydney. With Livia, she has to have the prune juice and even that doesn't work sometimes.

Is she too young for suppositories? Sarah had(still does at times) terrible constipation, and that is/was the only thing that would work. I think Sarah was quite a bit older then your baby when I first gave her one though.

Yup. The diluted juices are a good idea. You can also get the infant suppositories. We used those with my nephews... worked great.

Tammy - that's what I'm afraid of... that she's too young for just about everything right now.

Leah - do you remember how you mixed the water and brown sugar?
I know with the Karo syrup they told me 4 oz of water, 1 teaspoon of syrup. Is it the same for the water and sugar?
If she doesn't go again today, I would try that.

Kim - how old were your nephews when they had the suppositories? Do you remember?

Hmmm.... it's been so long ago (they are 16 & 18), but they were VERY little. If you get a chance, I would check out the label on a bottle. I think there are some made by the FLEETS company. I'll see if I can find some info for you.

Also, have you phoned her pediatrician's office again? Maybe they have some better ideas. I can vaguely remember being told NOT to use the Karo syrup in one of my baby classes.

Let me see what I can find. I hope Delaney's feeling better soon. Poor sweetheart.

Thanks Kim!! You are the best. I'm going to check out those sites now.

I thought I had heard NOT to give your baby water this young... but they told me yesterday to do so.
I asked the dr WHEN I should be concerned. If I should wait another day or two?
They told me... "It all depends on how much pain she is in. That if she's not in any pain, not to worry. That its normal."
How I HATE that answer!!!!

I KWYM.... give me straight answers, not that wishy-washy junk!

Oh yeah.... the Karo syrup thingy.... it can, in rare cases, cause botulism. We gave it to they boys and they are fine.

Good luck... I hope some of the resources help. Myself, I would try the suppositories. I think they have special ones for infants. I just try to make sure everything I get specifies INFANT.
