Security Systems: Hassle or helpful?

Do home security systems protect families or are they just a big hassle? I beginning to wonder if they are worth the money when things like this happen -

Prankster Smuggles Art Into Top Museums

Not only do most art musems have elaborate security systems, they also have armed guards.

I do think this guy is kind of funny though.

We have had three houses, and have had a security system in every one of them, and I wouldn't be without it. After my dad died, my mom lived on several acres by herself, and she needed that added comfort of a security system. It gave us all peace of mind.

I think they do give some peace of mind, but from the systems I've seen family and friends have installed, I don't think they're worth it. If you have the alarm on at night, chances are you're going to have it set so you can move around in your house. And chances are unless you forked out a lot of money, you don't have window sensors in case they are broken during a burglary. So, unless someone breaks down your door to get in, all they have to do is come in through your window and that gives them the chance to sneak up on you and your defenseless.

They do sell the ADT systems at either Lowes or Home Depot for a lot less than the company sells them and you can install it yourself and have it wired through your phone (I think) so that if someone breaks in, the police department is alerted. This saves you from having to pay ADT for the equipment, to install it and saves you a monthly fee. Plus you can get everything to protect your house completely, window sensors, door sensors, etc., for cheaper than ADT would charge you for half the equipment.

We have door and window sensors and since we are in a three story house, we have a motion detector downstairs, which they have to pass to get to us. The only way they could get in without setting off something is to get a really tall ladder and break an upstairs (third floor) window, which we would hear, and we have a .357 or a .38 waiting for them when they get in the window or up the stairs.

We just have a one-story so if we ever get a security system, ALL doors and windows will have sensors on them. If I'm gonna get it for protection, it's gonna protect everything not just some. If I lived in a two or more story like you, I'd do like you have done.

At our last house, we had a one story, and we had glass break sensors and sensors on all the doors and windows. My husband called it the "Fort Knox" alarm! He says that about this house, too. If I am going to have an alarm, it's going to be worth it. I am not going to take any chances with my family's safety!

Re: Security Systems: Hassle or helpful?

security systems, there is no shortage of choices. The availability of components and the decision of whether or not to use a monitored system tend to be two of the biggest considerations when designing home security systems that create peace of mind.
