No ultrasound?

I couldn't believe it, but I just found out Tricare Remote doesn't authorize you to have an ultra sound at all unless you have complications! I thought they authorized one, but they told me it is only at a MTF. I'm so bummed. I'm debating asking my doctor to do one and bill it separate, but I have no idea how much it costs.

Caitlin,
I don't know about Tricare Remote, but they say the same thing overseas. They got around it all the time by saying that they were checking the size of the baby, or the position, or tho check dates. My Doc just filled in that it was neccesary to ascertian due dates, and how far along I was. Tricare paid it without any qualms. Hope this helps...

We had a terrible tech when I was pregnant with Andie who wouldn't explain anything to us or say a word about what she saw, so we were contemplating paying for one. Once we found out it was about $800, we changed our minds!

I hope your doc will fudge a little for you.

WOW! I know how you feel. When I was active duty they didn't want to give me one. I begged though and finally got one. I don't know how much they cost because it's probably different with each place. I would check around and see how much it costs. Of course I would see if I could get them to fudge it first, too.

Well I asked how much the ultrasound would cost and they told me I'd be better off changing my PCM to the Military treatment facility in New Orleans (110 miles way) until I got my ultrasound and them changing back to them. So I guess she was trying to say it costs an arm and a leg. But nurse did say that is the doctor was going to try to get one approved because she thought I was too big for 13 weeks and the most accurate way to tell the age of the child was to do an ultrasound. Yeah! I hope it gets approved.

Oh I feel sooooo blessed now.... I had at least 5 ultrasounds from my 2 doctors, not including the extensive one that they ordered for genetic couseling (which I didn't need). Because of my age and previous complications I had it with Jordyn and they did the same with Rhandi (I had the same doctors). However there are a lot of people here that didn't get any, mainly active duty. But on the German economy the doctors do 3-d ultrasounds for about $50.00 (US dollars) and they give you pictures and I thinka video as well.
The Germans Docs, do them on the economy you are correct. They are the ones who did mine they made a video. What I didn't realize was the different systems affected it. We couldn't see the picture at all, German VCR are a different kind then ours. And the Doc didn't give us Pics because he made us the tape.
Did you have a multi-system VCR??

Where were you stationed over here?
No I didn't have a multi-system. I don't even have the tape anymore...Jim got rid of it thinking it was messed up. At the time we were stationed in Buedigen, then we moved to Hanau.
Wow--Where I was stationed they gave one to everyone--usually around the time where you can tell what the sex is.

Everyone I talked to got one. I would have gotten as many as needed since I was labeled high risk. But since I never went past 6 1/2 months they never had to give me more than one! The doc. who did my u/s (he was an actual u/s specialist and OB) had a lot of rank and gave us about 15 pictures of Christian....and one for each set of grandparents that said "It's a boy" on them.

I hope you get one! Hopefully they approve it for you!!

If you are having problems getting one and you think this is going to be the only one you get. Do you think you should wait until the baby is bigger? They wouldn't give me mine until I was 6 months along. I got pictures.

Wendy,
The only reason they are not wanting to give me one is because I use Tricare Prime Remote. The nearest military hospital is 110 miles awayother wise I'd go there and get one.

Darla,
As for as waiting...although to have the picture would be nice, my husband doesn't want to know if it is a boy or a girl....AND since I can't keep a secret at all, I'd let the cat out of the bag eventually. Although I got a ton of ultrasounds with my first child, I never got any pictures, so its not going to kill me not to have it.

I did read that you had Remote. I met oh wow that you won't get one. I know they are picky about u/s. They don't like to give anymore than they have too. I know a lot of people only get one while using Prime. And if they want more they really have to beg for it.

Ok I guess I am lost on Tricare remote, is this like Standard, if I am getting it correct you are not living near a Post and are recieving care in Civilian Clinic. If this is the case, some how we manage to be at home when I get Pregnant and this is my 2nd child on Tricare being born in Civilain Hospital. So far I have had to pay nothing out of pocket, expect copay for vitaimins. The Dr. did a U/S and said I was measuring big on both of my pregnancy's and have not had to pay anything. We are 3hrs from a from a Post.

prime remote is not tricare standard. prime remote is for active duty/family who are not stationed at a post. there are some ways to get around not being authorized an ultra sound it just depends on how willing your doctor is to do it. i followed some othe suggested posted earlier in the tread and did get an ultrasound (2 actually)

That is great I am a SAHM myself and love it!
I am not sure how remote works either..I am assuming that you are using a civilian doctor? I used standard with both pregnancies. I was very high risk and had to have several ultrasounds. Each time my doctor did have to have prior authorization but they said it was medically needed. They also had to do this for all of my non-stress tests and for other tests. Otherwise I could never have afforded them.

Yeah that's too bad. Insurance companies are really trying to skate any unnecessary costs these days. One time mine got canceled because the hospital was doing ultrasound repairs. It didn't take long but I was excited to find out my baby's gender and then it was delayed. I'm sure all of these things cost quite a bit of many.
