Medicine that should not be taken by nursing mothers

I am quoting from The Complete Book of Breastfeeding by Marvins S. Eiger, Sally Wendkos Olds
Quote:
Bromocriptine (Parlodel)
Reason - Inhibits prolactin secretion, decreases milk supply

Chemotherapeutic agents used to treat cancer: Cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan, Neosar, Procytox)
Doxorubicin, Methotrexate (Amethopterin)
Reason - These drugs are given precisely because they kill cells in the body. There is a danger, there-fore that even a tiny dose may have harmful effects on the cells in the baby's system. They may suppress a baby's immune system, and their effect on growth is unkown.

Ergotamine (Ergomar, Ergostat, Gynergen)
Reason - Doses used in medicines for migraine headaches can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and convulsions in baby. May decrease milk supply.

Lithium
Reason - Can cause irritablility and poor feeding

Antidepressants (Prozac, Zoloft, and tricyclic agents)
Reason - Can cause drowsiness and irritablility in infant. Unknown long-term effects on child's central nervous system.

Atenolol
Reason - This drug, which is givien to prevent migraine headaches and also to lower blood pressure, may cause slowing of a baby's heart rate, especially in preterm infants or those with impaired kidney function.
I am in way trying to tell you not to take any medicine...if your dr has ok'd it..then it is fine, but I just ran across this while looking for something else. I thought it may be some help to someone.

This is fantastic information Libby!!! I had to have some major stuff done while nursing Kale and nobody wanted me to take my meds and nurse him except for my LLL leader and my lactation consultant .. I did and all was fine!!

I think what you are doing for women is wonderful!

Like my DR told me...if you take medication right after you nurse the baby...by the time the next nursing session came around...the baby would get very little medicine.

I didn't want to take any medication for pain since I had a c-section...my DR reassured me it would be ok.

Thank you Roxanna...ever since I started breastfeeding Elizabeth...that's all I have ever wanted to do...is to help others breastfeed. Now I am...I'm stressed at times because people that has NEVER breastfeed a child or even attempted is telling the moms to be what they need to do. Then they question me because I'm not a family member...its like they think I don't have their best interest at heart or something. that's what I'm dealing with right now with a girl. Anyway...thank you. I get off track sometimes.

I have a client that wants to breastfeed, but she is taking Zoloft. I have asked different people about it and one person told me that you can take it while pregnant, but you can't while breastfeeding. The medicine will be in your breastmilk. If you take Zoloft for one day...it will take 2 - 3 days for it to get out of your system

Just thought you all would like to know the piece of info I found out.

I've taken anti-ds while nursing. Zoloft to be exact. Some meds are not safe, but most are.
