When should children start writing thank you notes?

I was reading an article and they said that kids that are 8-9 should be writing thank you notes.

Are children still taught this?

Shouldn't this 1 be an example taught by parents and 2 started before then?

It should be started before then!!!!

Mine have been doing it forever. It started out as a drawing. Then it was signing their name to a dictated note. And then writing the note themselves.

I think it should be started earlier as well.
I know that right now - Kyler is almost 4. I write a thank you note and he "draw's" in the note as well. And I explain to him why we are sending thank you's.
Hopefully, it will become natural for him to right a thank you note when he gets a gift.
