Concerned-Dr did not want to do & did not do physical exam at first visit

As most of you know my ydd is expecting her first baby. Due to her size & the lack of a real period we guessed her to be approx 2 months, she took 3 at home pregnancy test late Sat. night and told us the results Sunday afternoon. Today was her first Dr. appointment, they did a sonogram & told her she was 4 weeks pregnant & he did not want to do a physical exam, so he didn't & rescheduled her for another appointment for next week. I've had three children & this one was my nineth, family history of miscarriages, in fact her eldest sister had just had to have one fetus removed from her tube as well as a malformed fetus from her uterus & one ovary. I don't every remember having to go back a week later nor did my dr not do a physical exam. I am a bit ok alot worried-any advise I want to be prepared as well as supportive for her when I get home. Thanks ladies.

I have a history of miscarriages and before my last one, they did not give me a physical exam, because I had a pap smear a few months before. If she's had a pap recently, he may not want to give her another.

I've never had a physical exam before the 5th or 6th week. In the military, they made you wait until 8 weeks. The fact that they could see the fetus on the sonogram is a good sign ... I don't think I'd be worried at this point. I guess different doctors just do things differently.

Hope all goes well!

Some Drs wait until about 8-10 weeks before doing a physical exam.

If the sonogram dated her at 4 weeks he likely wants to wait until at least five so he can tell more. 4 is very early and there isn't much they can tell then anyway. The fetus isn't really completely formed yet--likely saw a yolk sac and maybe the fetal pole. If he did an ultrasound then he knows the pregnancy is in the uterus not the tubes so she's safe there.

It sounds normal to me and this is my third pregnancy.

Believe it or not, my drs don't want to see you until 12 weeks!

Well I had an internal exam on my first appt. this time, only because I was unsure about how far along I might be. If they did an ultrasound instead, I'd be happy with that.

It sounds normal to me. If she was given an ultrasound, they are able to see pretty much everything they need to know at this point. At 4 weeks, there's not much that they are able to tell. If she is up to date on pap smears, she probably will not get another until that time comes again or until they do a culture near the end of the pregnancy - which ever comes first. The doctor should ask questions about health history and history of miscarriages in family around 8 weeks along - most doctors wont usually see you before then anyways. Once she tells the doctor the risks she may have from family history, I'm sure the doctor will be sure to look out for those things.

I was pretty far along before I had a physical exam, too. My pregnancy was high risk, and I had a couple of ultrasounds early on, but no physical exam, not even feeling the outside of my tummy until I was at least 12-15 weeks. Vaginal exams, not unitl I was 8 months pregnant.

For me, with Aiden, it was like with Tammy, I didn't get a vaginal exam till my 8th or 9 th month. All my other pregnancies I was aroound 8 weeks along. If you have a history with early miscarriages, they don't like to do an vaginal exam in the first trimester and there isn't any point in doing one in the second unless you have bleeding or contractions or your waters break. If nothing like that happens they generaly wait till you are closer to your EDD.

I went in at 4 weeks, and did not get an exam. The midwife just felt my cervix and said you are about 4 weeks. Come back in 4 weeks and we will do your internal exam. I guess they just wait until you are further along. I wouldn't worry about it. Though I don't know why they are doing it just a week later.... that is still early.
