Kinda sticky baby gift question

Kind of a sticky question.

I have a friend whose wife is expecting a baby pretty much any day now. They live in another state. This guy and I were really good friends when I lived on my own. But he wanted something more and I didn't. And it really put a strain on the friendship. We stayed friends, but we just don't talk anymore since our lives took us different ways. I haven't seen this guy since way before I got married and I've never met his wife. I did get an email from him right about the time he started dating her. But nothing since then. So, I'm wondering if sending a baby gift is really appropriate.

I wouldn't. Especially since you have never met the woman but that is jmo.

That is kind of what I was thinking, too. I mean, I would like to do something for them, but I don't want her to go "Who in the world is this from?" and then him have to explain who I was. I have a mutual friend who said "Oh, they'd love to hear from you," but if they'd like to hear from me, they haven't made much of an effort to get in contact. 'Ya know?

And if I sent a card, I would put the whole family's names on there. Then he can say you were old friends from college and leave it at that.

That is probably a good idea. She certainly wouldn't recognize the "Nolan" name, even if she did recognize my first name.
