Food & Water During Labor?

I've noticed that a lot have said they were starving after their kids were born and couldn't wait to eat. So I'm curious to know . . . Were you allowed to eat or drink anything during labor?

The nurses tried to tell me that I couldn't eat or drink anything and I told them they were crazy!! I wasn't hungry at all, but I was very thirsty and wanted water - not ice chips - to drink. They wouldn't get me any and Billy was on his way out the door to get me some when one nurse finally came in and said they got in touch with my doctor who said I could drink water if I wanted to, so she had brought me some.

Personally, I think it is inhumane to tell a woman they cannot eat or drink. Their body still needs nutrition and will tell them when it's not needed anymore. I do believe the body will shut down the functions that are not necessary when it comes time to, but if it is telling you that it's hungry, then it obviously needs food!! What if you are in labor for 30 hours? How will you get the energy to keep going if you can't eat or drink anything?

Like I said, I wasn't hungry during my labor, but I had eaten on my way to the hospital and I guess that sustained me until after Alexander was born. If I had been hungry, there is no way they would have stopped me from eating!! I actually didn't get hungry until the next morning, so I went for about 20 hours without eating - a new record!!

I got ice chips for 15 hours... I wasn't hungry until after Olivia showed up, but boy, I could've used the water! It is inhumane!!!

I think they tell women that in case they have to have emergency surgery. Saves them from having to pump your stomach. Pump it for all I care I'll eat and drink as I please!!!

I didn't care what they had to say, and I didn't ask! I told DH to get me some water, and no one said anything to me(not that I would have listened anyway)!

They gave (snuck) me graham crackers and ginger ale, but I was told I couldn't have anything to eat or drink. With Duncan, being my first, i let it go. Iw as starving afterwards.
With Logan, not only did I stop and get something on the way to the hospital (around 1 am ) But I went down for breakfast (albeit 10 minutes) at about 7 am. There was no way I was going through that again. With this one, I will eat and drink as I please. Let 'em try and stop me.

I didn't get anything from midnight the night before until dinner after the baby was born. Ughhh. They would bring me ice chips and I'd let them melt and then drink the water. ha ha. They also let me have popsicles. The doctor told me that they didn't want me to have anything heavy because they were afraid that if they had to do a C-section (which they did) they were afraid I would aspirate. But when I actually got into hard labor, I didn't want anything. But I was starving after the birth, and I couldn't have anythign but clear liquids. Ughh. I got broth, juice, water, Pepsi, and jello that night. Not great, but better than nothing. The next morning, he let me have a regular breakfast, thank goodness.

I was on steriods when I went to the hospital. That morning they gave me a cup of orange juice and 2 crackers so that I could take my medicine. Then nothing, but ice chips for the rest of the day.

Then at 10:00pm they let me have a coke and ice cream...they considered it dinner. But I really never got so hungry that my tummy rumbled.

I had forgotten to ask, so I didn't eat anything - didn't even drink any

I do remember that Jack went and got me a Dr Pepper after they got me back to my room Don't remember eating any lunch, but man did I chow dinner

I was not allowed anything bc they suspected I would need a c-section (and I did), but I was allowed small amounts of water during the day.

My Mum had bought my favourite lunch for me tho, and just bc I couldn't eat it they didn't want it to go to waste, so my darling husband, my mother and my aunt sat around making themselves ham, cheese and tomatoe sandwichs on fresh bread buns altho they did go out the side door into the garden to eat them I still reckon they owe me big time for that one

When I was in labor with Kiera they brought me a whole tray of juice, jello, and coffee(no cream). I drank the coffee, but after that my pain was so bad that I didn't want anything else.

I got to eat and drink normally. I usually only drink water or sprite. I did have a c-section and I got to eat normally all along. Although, they did keep sending my food covered with cheese even though I said I was allergic to dairy.

I had dinner when I was in labor with Lyssa (but it was early stages and I didnt have time to really eat or drink anything with Kate cause it all happened so fast. I puked with both of them while I was in labor - So I am not really into eating anything. They brought be water right away after though.

I was able to drink whateve ri wanted....i had no desire to eat at all....even after 20 hours of labor..

I could eat or drink anything until hard labor set in - then they wouldn't even give me ice chips.

I could understand that though. I was feeling very sick every time I had a contraction. I thought I was going to vomit a few times. She told me that that's the natural progression and it happens some times. So... if I would have had much in my stomach - it would have surely come out.

I wasn't in labor long, but in the last hour, I did , but since I hadn't eaten in over 12 hours, there wasn't much. I had little interest in food until after he arrived. As for hydration, I had an IV, so ice chips were enough to keep my mouth moist - I didn't *need* to drink.

I had jello the morning I was induced with Austin.... and promptly thew that up after the nurse put my IV in! that was a waste. for the next 18 hours I had ice chips too... BUT.. after Austin was born.. the kitchen staff brought me up a turkey sandwhich and I SWEAR that was the VERY BEST turkey sandwhich i'd ever eaten!

With Dylan I had ice chips too... he was born at 5:23pm so they still had dinner. So I got to eat some chicken breasts and masted potatos and gravy! that was pretty good stuff too! That was the best meal I'd eaten through my whole pregnancy. I felt INSTANTLY better after Dylan was born!

I had a popsicle and apple juice and grape juice.

With the other three, I had no restrictions. With a possible c-section with this one, I don't know. If I give birth nautrally, I won't listen to the restrictions.

I know they have those restrictions in case they do have to do an emergency c-section because they don't want all that food and water on your tummy. But when you've been in labor for hours and need something to keep you going . . . ice chips don't cut it!
I pigged out before I went to the hospital. So I probably wasn't suffering to badly. I know the water pissed me off too, ice cubes don't cut it when you need a drink. I remember being more mad AFTER having Brandon and not being allowed to have any water.

Re: Food & Water During Labor?

As your labor progresses you will want to switch to more simple carbohydrates that will give you bursts of energy but will leave your body quickly. Some suggestions of these are juices, honey, and fruits. You may want to make up some juice-sicles to have. Even if you are at the hospital at this point most hospitals have a nourishment room with a freezer where they can be stored. During this period you will want to eat smaller amounts more frequently. During your labor you may come to a time when your body may tell you to "stop!" If you don't feel like eating now then don't. Your digestive system will slow down, and it is okay to trust your body and what it is telling you.
