How do you read to your child?

I read some people say that as long as a younger child is being exposed to literature, that they can play with legos or whatever while you are reading.

Do you allow your child to play while you read, or do they sit next to you and look at the pictures?

My son loves to sit on my lap while I read book after book. I would welcome a little playing on the floor while I read at times.

I don't think it's a problem if they don't sit right with you and look at the pictures - there are some kids who learn and retain better whilst moving about...

both. I read to her during her bath so she can play longer. Other times, she'll sit in my lap or next to me and look at the pictures. Recently, I've been reading her stories w/o pics and I am pleased she is still paying attention.

When I took The Teaching of Reading K-12, lap reading in the early years was emphasized. It helps kids learn the mechanics of reading--reading words from left to right, left page first then the right page, etc. I don't think it's necessary to do lap reading all the time, but it's important to do it. Emily prefers lap reading, but we read side by side or however she is comfortable all the time.

Zachary usually stands or sits at my side when we read. I've gotten bad about reading lately though.

My mom read to us all the time when we were little. I think by the time I was 7 she had gone through the entire Cronicles of Narnia and Little House series. They didn't have pictures so she sat in a chair while we were in bed and read to us.

I learned the same thing, Tammy. It also helps children to associate the written word with the sounds they are hearing (and often the pictures help do that, as well).

Jonathan loves books. He loves to sit and look at them and try to figure out the words and look at the pictures. But he doesn't like to sit for the actual story, unless it's very short. He will sit through several pages, but eventually he wants up if it's longer than he wants to sit. If I continue to read it out loud, he does hear it, because he will repeat parts of it later that I know he didn't hear while he was sitting next to me.

My kids love to sit next to me and listen to stories. Even Payton is at the age where she is requesting books and sitting to listen through the entire thing. We read every day at bedtime. My boys read by themselves in their bed every night as well.

We read every night at bedtime and my kids sit around me or DH as we read. Whoever isn't reading holds the baby. Other times when I read to them, if they start playing then I just start making up stories to tell them and encourage them to do the same or to act out the one I'm telling.
