Maternal serum / triple screen ??

Anyone ever have their tests show increase in risk for birth defects?

My levels came back high as an indicator for Down's. The doctor said it was only slightly elevated and that it is only an indication of increased risk... the test can't detect a birth defect ...but I'm still really worried.
They moved my ultrasound from Wed. at the local hospital to Thursday at OSU because they can do a level II or targeted ultrasound.
This is the first time I've ever opted for the triple screen because I've always said that the results wouldn't change my mind about anything but Shane was more comfortable having it done.
Sometimes I wonder how much more I can take.

I've known several people that have had false positive results and one that actually had a baby with down's (but she was mid-30's and I believe there was a family history).

Hopefully the ultrasound will rule it out for you

I had a girlfriends whos levels were just like yours and their baby was born without downs.

I never had the test done, I figured it would be extra worry for nothing! I'm sure everything is fine!

My sister has hers come back elivated but my little neice is fine. A gril here at work had the same thing, came back elevated and everything was fine. I thinmk they will tell you there is a higer rate of false positives with that test.

Yeah I read that only 1 in every 8 babies where the tests indicate risk turn out to be positive for Down's... still it is something to worry about.
I am happy to be going to OSU though because I already had a bad experience with how back woods the other hospital is.

I came back high on t he triple screening simply because of my age. I opted out of the amino, because I was terrified of loosing my baby. They looked at the folds in her neck and her back, then determined that she was fine. In fact, she's a smart little rascal. There might be a million and one reasons why your results came back high that have nothing to do with the health of your baby.

I had a false positive with the triple screen.

I hope everything turns out to be okay.

i am wondering how my test will come out this time around specially since i will be 35 when i deliver

i hope your U/S goes well Elaine!

Elaine, you are strong and you can handle whatever happens, but in all likelihood, everything is okay.
I opted not to have this test done with Emily because I have had SO MANY friends and coworkers get the same type of result on this test as you did and EVERY SINGLE ONE of them had normal, healthy children with no birth defects. The results scared them and worried them for no reason. I talked to my doctor about it and he respected my decision not to have the test done.
Please keep us posted on the ultrasound. You will be in my prayers, but I already know you and your baby are going to be just fine.

I know several people who have had elevated levels, and their children were all fine.

Elaine wishing the best for you.

My sister in law had elevated levels. She was freaked out as well. She had the ultra sound done and her due date was slightly off which is why the results were wrong. If you don't get the test done at the right time it will show a false positive. The test is not really that acurate so I wouldn't worry too much. I chose not to have the test done because the # of false positives is high and would prefer not to have the additional stress. I hope everything is okay!

I opted NOT to do them because of the high rate of false positives. I will take whatever God gives me. Why worry about what you really can't fix? Just how I see it. (My humble opinion.)

Kim, I agree. That was how I felt about it, too.

My levels were slightly elevated with Dylan, and I am a positive that I do carry the downs gene, i've been genetically tested before.

Dylan ended up just fine.

I'll be thinking of you

Kim, I have never had the test done before for the same reasons but Shane really wanted it done.

I will say a prayer that it is just a false positive.
