Pregnancy question

I don't know where this should go so if it needs to be moved feel free to do that.

A friend of ours is in her 12th week of PG. She had an ultrasound today but they were unable to locate the baby with the external ultrasound, so they had to do a vaginal ultrasound where they saw that the baby was small. Is there any reason this would be? She is fearing the worst. I don't know what to tell her it could be.

I would think that maybe she's not as many weeks as she thinks.

How much smaller than what she thought?

that is a hard call, i hope everything is ok with the baby

Probably miscalculated her last AF. If there's a baby and a heart beat then it's all good

Exactly--what Genie said.

Wrong dates, most likely. That's why everyone shoudl be offered an early dating ultrasound. they are very accurate if done early (around 8 weeks).

But could she have miscalculated that much. She says she is 12 weeks and they weren't able to find the baby with an external ultrasound, they had to do a vaginal ultrasound to see it. I don't know too much as this info was relayed by DH and he didn't want to ask too many questions of her B/F (Jay's co-worker).

I had an ultrasound at 12 weeks because they couldn't find Jonathan's heartbeat on the dopler in the office. My doctor told me that they got more detail with a transvaginal, they could get better details and get closer estimates prior to 20 weeks. I don't know if this is true or not, but I had three ultasounds, and we did get the best pictures adn more detail with that first one. At 12 weeks, they said Jonathan was 3 inches long. That's about all I remember, though. As long as the baby is there and there's a heartbeat, I wouldn't be too worried, either!

Thanks everybody. Her B/F thinks the same thing that she may not be as far along as they thought she was. They will know more when she sees the doctor. They did see the baby and have heard the heartbeat.
