I'm thinking about using a train theme for Jonathan's birthday next month. Has anyone done this before? Any good ideas for cake, decorations, etc.?

We did a Thomas party for Drew when he was about 4-5. I made a train bean bag toss out of different sized boxes (really easy!), Pin the Caboose on the train (just get some pics of trains enlarged), did "Thomas Bingo" (make up the card [blank] by making a table in Word and makeenough copies for all the kids. Get pics of different Thomas characters and make several copies of each. Then glue/tape pics of Thomas figures on the different squares and do a bingo game!). We bought a Thomas pinata for outside.
For the cake, we simply did a store bought Thomas cake and then made a 1/2 sheet cake cut in half for a car and the caboose. That way we could have white and chocolate cake. Put some black icing on them for tracks and used some of Drew's plastic trains to decorate it.
Another idea that a friend of mine did was to get engineer hats for all the kids and use fabric paint on them to write the kids names. They also got a wooden engineer whistle with their name on it. Those were their goodie bags, along with some candy. Pretty cool ideas, I thought!
