Dyslexia or just a lefty thing?

TJ is a lefty. I'm a little concerned that he writes everything backwards. For example, if he were writing CODY, he would spell it YDOC. In addition, the D would be backwards.

He reverses a LOT of his letters (E, F, D, B, P, L, G come to mind).

Is this just because he's a lefty or could there be more to it? Is it something I should really work on now with him or will it come to him as he starts reading and writing more?

i would just work with him !! go to wallie world or target and get those preschool books to help write !! michael loved those .. he felt like a big boy !!

My Mom is a lefty I sure can ask her if that was a problem for her but I am going to say it was it, I have never heard her talk about it but I am not certain. I would work on it and see what the teachers say too.

Haley didn't do entire words like that but she wrote letters backward well into 2nd grade. I'm fairly certain she still does it on ocasion.

Yeah, I think that one is pretty common .. Cody has issues with that as well. It's the writing the entire word backwards in addition to that which is concerning me. But when you ask him how to spell something, he spells it in the right order (orally), then writes it down backwords.

I'm dsylexic and right handed. Back when I was growing up, they just made you work at it until you got it right. Does he have problems telling right from left and get lost easily? These are other symptoms of dsylexia. I can only remember right from left when I am holding a pencil.

Me, my brother and my mom are all left handed. I just asked her if we did that and she said not that she remembered. I pulled out my little scrapbook to check, and did not see any like that.

The little girl next door (who is 6) writes completely backwards---like reading in a mirror. She is right handed. I was shocked when I saw her writing so I kept asking her to write more. My driveway was totally covered in chalk that day.

I did it for awhile when I was little, I'm a lefty too. I guess I'd just work with him. Are you writing sitting across from him, maybe he's writing it how he's seeing it Hopefully it's just a stage he's going through.

Thanks ladies! Jen - what you're describing with your neighbor is pretty much what he is doing.

I did a little googling and it looks like it's not that uncommon at this age. He does know his left from his right and doesn't usually mix them up, and it really looks to me like writing from right to left seems like the natural flow for him, which is why I thought maybe it was a lefty thing.

I'll try working with him some on it -- quite frankly, he's teaching himself to write, so I don't know where it's coming from unless maybe it's from watching Steve write? Incidentally, this came up before when we were talking about TJ being a lefty. Steve is NOT ... but ... if he mirrors Steve, then it would look that way to him ... make sense?

Skye is a lefty, she writes from right to left, instead of the other way around, so she can see what she's writing. It makes her write her words backwards also. Apparanlty that's normal for left handed kiddies

Makes sense to me, Dawn. I have to agree with Cody on this oral test are so much easier. I guess just call me jabber jaws.

My nephew is a lefty. I don't think he wrote his name backwards, but I know he wrote letters backwards. The first grader I tutor was writing LOTS of letters backwards for several months, and then after lots of practice, that has improved. I think it takes lots of practice. As for the CODY being written YDOC, I don't know. I would ask his teacher.

Dawn - Ryan is a lefty as well. He has a hard time at daycare because he is the ONLY lefty. (with writing and scissors) however ...

he write alot of things backwards too .... but what I am finding is it doesnt seem like dyslexia (for Ryan anyhow) I think because he uses his left hand he has a harder time judging the size of the page - and he writes his letters to close to the other side- then just randomly finds a place for the next letter ...

Something to watch though- I know I watch Ryan with this and I will continue to see how it goes....
