Pre-conception doctor visit

Ok, so I went to my doctor today for a "pre-conception" visit. My husband and I have decided to start trying for a baby, and I want to do this right, so I figured start with my regular doctor and go from there. All she did for me was give me a list of ob/gyn's and give me a prescription for prenatal vitamins. Woopie. I managed to squeeze in a question or two before she rushed me out of her office (Of course after I waited about an hour to see her). I was expecting her to give me a once-over, do some bloodwork, etc. Have any of you had pre-conception visits and did you have more done? I've always felt this doctor wasn't the greatest, but now I have another person to think about!

Is this your primary physician? Maybe have that talk with your OB/GYN instead. I never went before getting pregnant to get any work up so I don't know if they do anything or not.

Dumb question - but can I go to a OB/GYN before I'm actually pregnant? We haven't even started trying yet. I have a couple more weeks until I'm off the NuvaRing and I want to make sure I'm taking vitamins ahead of time.

Yeah you can go to one before you get pregnant, they actually do Paps as well...that's where I go to get mine. I never went before I tried to get pregnant though, we just

You don't have to be pregnant to go to the OB/GYN. You can make an appt for your annual exam/pap smear, then discuss getting pregnant at that time. They probably won't do much more for you than answer a few questions and prescribe pre-natals, unless there is a family history of genetic issues.

Honestly, I've never been prior to being pregnant either, unless it was just for an annual exam or other female problems. I'm surprised your primary doctor didn't just go ahead refer you to an OB/GYN instead of even having you come in.

Good luck and welcome to BabyU!

I kind of had a pre-conception visit. Although - I had it when I had my pap.
Just like the other ladies mentioned - she basically just answered a few questions I had and prescriped me pre-natal vitamins.

I started going to the ob-gyn when I was 18. (WAY before I was pregnant. )

I went once after my first miscarriage. Mainly we discussed genetic issues and what to do healthwise when you are ttc. Bascially, you're supposed to live like you are pregnant - no smoking, no alchol, no medications you cannot take while you are pregnant, eat a well balanced, healthy diet, etc. Also, if you do not excerise, they may reccommend excerise.

I would go to an OB/GYN for preconception appointment. Usually they do a pap and sometimes bloodwork. Plus if you don't already had an OB you can decide if the one you go to is one you like before you get pregnant. You definitely want an OB you feel comfortable with and trust to deliver your baby. Also one who will answer all of your questions and not rush you out of the door.

I'm lucky my primary doctor is also an OB/GYN. She said the same thing the other ladies said. Start taking vitamins eat well, excercise, all that stuff. Good luck and To the U

I never went to a pre-conception visit, but I saw plenty of doctors before I had my first baby. (Three miscarriages and 2 years of fertility treatment) If you not high risk, they just put you on prenatals and that's about it.

I also never went in for a preconception visit... But if you haven't had one, maybe just go for a full physical, if you feel that it is something you need to do. That way you can make sure you're completely healthy, no thyroid or anemia problems, that sort of thing. Good luck TTC!

I've always gone to an OB/GYN for any of that sort of treatment. In my experience, a specialist will do more for you than the primary. I had my annual exam, labs and started prenatals. I had a TON more tests and procedures (took over 4 years ttc for my daughter), so I worked very closely with my OB.

Good luck! Take your vitamins and take care of yourself.

My OB/GYN did a whole battery of bloodwork, my pap, and discussed the other health issues (like switching my BP meds to something I could take during pregnancy). If you don't have any underlying issues, they may not do the bloodwork, I guess.
