I need help teaching

Emily to read. I have never taught anyone to read before. I have done remediation, but never taught from the beginning. When we read to her, she will point to words and say, "What does that word say?" And she will say, "What does apple start with?" I think she might be ready. Anyone know how I start?

Umm .. I've been coming to YOU for reading advice! Does she already know her alphabet and phonics? I think it's great she's showing such an interest! Those Leapfrog videos really help out ... they have them for letters, phonics & words!

I worked with kindergarteners... she knows the sounds the letters of the alphabet make? Get some flash cards with simple words, (cat, dog, ran, etc.). Show her how to sound the letters out to say the word. I remember one of my little boys, once he got started sounding out and he knew all the sounds the letters made, there was no stopping him! One day he struggled with a word, I went to help him, and he said "No Miss Meghan, I want to try to do it myself." Do a few new words each week, but also make sure to practice the "old" words. Oh and Bingo, when she's learned enough of the words, it's good practice. Coloring pages, with the word on it that she would have to trace over first, then color for fun. I'll try to remember what else I worked on with them...

I know! I mean, I think I know what to do, but I am not sure entirely. I was thinking of teaching her a letter or two a week and going from there depending on how well she picks it up. With Cody, I felt confident in helping you because his teachers had already laid a foundation. Starting from scratch is intimidating, and what if I mess up?

I have heard that A Beka teaches preschoolers the sound of the letter first that way it is easier for kids to read. Look into A Beka and see what they have that you could use. http://www.abeka.com/

I don't think this site has lesson plans on it, but it is a really good teaching resource. http://www.dltk-teach.com/

I go to the crafts section there a lot.

When my oldest started showing an interest in what words "said" we taught him the sounds of the letters and how to sound out words first. There are plenty of good early readers out there, I'm sure, but the ones we used (because we had them at home) were Dr. Seuss books. They are great because they repeat the same words and sounds over and over, making them easy for beginners.

I believe in Hooked on Phonics. They are WONDERFUL!!! I swear by their program. Worked for Kirstie-Raie and Chase .. both read before starting PreK nad KR at 3. It is working for Kale too.

Kinda expensive .. but SOOOO owrth it because everything is included in the program .. EVERYTHING you will need!!!!!

HERE is what we have. But Sam's had another set that is very much like this one for less.
