I received this e-mail this morning from a friend. Obviously, she wasn't thinking very clearly when she sent it to me, a survivor of Hurricane Andrew. I highly doubt much of this e-mail is true. Here's what I found on Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu's web page:

Quote:
Sen. Landrieu took to the floor before the vote on the Department of Defense Appropriations bill, to urge her colleagues to support the $29 billion within the bill for real, direct relief for Gulf Coast residents (12/21/05)
Wow, it went from $29 billion to $250 billion. Someone is one of those students who didn't do so well on those standardized mathmatics exams. I would show my friend the truth of this e-mail, but I have learned the hard way, the ignorant are usually pretty content to remain ignorant. And if my friend believes this load of crap, she is being ignorant in this regard.

When the rebuilding started she did ask for $250 billion.

From the Washington Post:

Monday, September 26, 2005; Page A01

Louisiana's congressional delegation has requested $40 billion for Army Corps of Engineers projects in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, about 10 times the annual Corps budget for the entire nation, or 16 times the amount the Corps has said it would need to protect New Orleans from a Category 5 hurricane.

Louisiana Sens. David Vitter (R) and Mary Landrieu (D) tucked the request into their $250 billion Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief and Economic Recovery Act, the state's opening salvo in the scramble for federal dollars.

I know exactly what you mean, Liz. My family is the same way. When I was in the military, they complained constantly how I was "getting a free ride off of their tax dollars." I like my friend, but she doesn't think things like this through. You know sweetie, you send your kids to tax funded public schools, you drive down tax paid for public roads, you eat food made safe because of tax funded regulations, etc... but you don't want to pay taxes. You're right Liz, she should move to Mongolia or heck, just give up everything and live homeless here (the homeless don't really pay a lot of taxes) and see how much she likes it.
