Tomatoes

I just learned on Martha Stewart that we shouldn't keep our tomatoes in the fridge ... did you know that?

How come? They'll over ripen if you don't and then rot. I always put mine in there once they are good and ripe.

We don't eat tomatoes so it isn't something I do but I've always heard you should leave them out on a window sill or in a paper bag to ripen and then refridgerate once they reach the level of ripeness that you want them to.
I do know that you are suppose to eat fresh tomatoes at room temp though for the best flavor.

It was weird, she didnt say much - one of her guests came in and said ' I just learned from your chef not to refridgerate tomatoes' and Martha was like, Oh no never refridgerate them - but I dont know why!! I will have to look it up, ALL my fruits and veggies (except bananas & garlic) go in the fridge - I know they shouldnt all, but even my potatos and onions

for once i had actually known that one

i buy the on the vine tomatoes and as long as they are still on the vine they are better at room temperature, they last a ton longer.

Interesting! I am always afraid leaving fruits and veggies out that they will get bugs or something - I guess I will start trying it to see!

I thought it was only if you wanted them to ripen to leave them out.

I keep bananas, apples, oranges and potatoes out but that's it. The rest go into the fridge.

I don't really like tomatoes, but I've heard the same thing. I always put them in the fridge out of habit. My mom liked them ice cold!

I knew that because DH always gets on my case if I put them in the refrigerator.
