Can allegies cause you to get sick?

I know the obvious ... allergies can cause an ultimate upper respiratory infection. Believe me ... I know that one well. But can having your body constantly battling allergies make you more sucseptible to everyday bugs? In my case, my allergies have been absolutely horrible this year. To make matters worse, I catch EVERY thing that goes around. Every little bug (cold, stomach, etc) the kids get ... and 1/2 the time, I catch stuff that they don't even get.

I broke down today and called my allergist to get started back up on my shots, but I was just curious if it was reasonable to think that maybe my allergies are to blame for alot of other illnesses?

I don't see any reason why allergies couldn't lower your immune system. It would seem to me that it could, I'm no doctor but sounds like you're on the right track.

Yep. Your immune system's altered with the allergies. It only seems that it would leave you a little more susceptible to becoming sick.

Thanks for some hope ladies! I am SO SICK of BEING SICK that I've willingly set up an appointment to discuss some sinus surgery that I've been putting off for 8 or more years as well. Sigh ....

Dawn.

I'm glad you asked this, though. It does make sense. My allergies have been extremely bad this year. And I've caught I don't know how many colds this year on top of the allergies, which stinks!

I would think so. I understand that surgery is a god send.

I agree! I like lots of things can stem from allergies.

Did you call for the surgery yet?

I have an appt next week to get back on the weekly injections and an appt in June to discuss the surgery. I'm still not real sure about that. They didn't want to do the surgery 8 years ago because of my severe allergies, so I'm not sure if that will change. I'm thinking about eliminating things one by one. I'm going to go ahead and get going on the injections, then when my head clears up enough that I can stand it, I'm going to get a couple of teeth fixed (I've read that abcessed teeth can cause sinus problems and I have two that wouldn't surprise me to find that they are infected), then I'll probably look at having my nose fixed this fall when my allergies aren't as bad.

Maybe by the end of the year, I'll be straightened out.

I have year round allergies so I know what I'm talking bout and I know what you are going through. I have been on allergy shots for last few years and now they are really starting to work. I would advise anyone who is taking allergy shots not to stop them no matter what if you think they are not working or tired of the shots. There were so many times I wanted to stop the shots but kept them up and now I am getting better.

Yes allergies can lower your immune system because they can cause you not to sleep well at night and lack of sleep with lower your immune system and make you susceptible to everything under the sun.

This year is the first year that I did not get an upper respiratory infection but just an ear infection and that is a first for me. ( I did not even know I had an earache I thought I had the flu).

I know what you are going through so I am here for you.

I would think that allergies could weaken your immune system, making you more suseptible to other illness. I seem to have more problems since I've developed allergies.
