Do your kids have too much stuff?

Both of my older two kids have way too much stuff. Too many toys, too many books, too many stuffed animals... It goes on and on and is just ridiculous. How do you 1, cut back on the amount of "stuff" they own without them throwing a fit and 2, change the habit of buying and accumulating things so it doesn't happen again?

We never even unpacked some of their boxes of toys and junk when we moved up here... there are still a dozen boxes of things sitting in the basement. I'm thinking that I may peek through them to make sure I'm not tossing anything important and then leave them behind for Shane to deal with. If we've lived without it for 10 months we can continue to right?

yes, yes, yes!!!!

We have some things that have some sentimental value and I don't want to get rid of those, but we have a ton of stuff that's just.... STUFF. And I'm a sucker for anything cute, so I usually buy it for him.

Yes, my kids have way too much stuff. I'm having a garage sale this summer and getting rid of a lot of it. I was going through stuff the other day, and I realized that a lot of the stuff I didn't buy for them, their grandma did. They got more from her at Easter than the Easter bunny.

Every year, after Joey's birthday and after Christmas (both giant toy-accumulation times ), he and I go through all of his things together and weed out things that he doesn't play with anymore.

Sometimes, if we are planning a yard sale in early summer, we'll do it then, too - the deal then is that all toys he puts out he can't have back, even if they don't sell, but he gets to keep all the money from selling those toys. Last time, he made like $20!

And since I tend to buy him quite a few things at thrift stores, etc., when we take stuff to donate it I explain we're doing it so that another child's mom can buy if for them so they can play with it a while, and he seems to like that idea.

Oh yeah ... way too much stuff. We finally went through the boys' room and I tossed a lot of junk. There were a few things they totally flipped over and had to keep, which I allowed, but for the most part, if it wasn't played with or broken, it was gone. We went from two huge drawers full of stuff to one large Rubbermaid container being 3/4 full. I'm thrilled!

YES but you know my problem know is not knowing what to donate and what to keep with the new baby coming. Part of me wants to keep it all however that not practicle.
