Teaching Your Baby To Eat

Isaiah will be 9 mos very soon and I have yet to teach him how to eat with a spoon and feed himself and all of that. I just don't have the patience. Everytime I try he just snatches the spoon and won't let go. It's so hard! I haven't even given him baby food on a regular basis. I let him try foods that I'm eating occasionally but not enough for him to learn. Anybody else have these problems? How did you deal?

Just give him the spoon and let him go at it. You can feed him with the spoon to make sure he actually eats, but let him have it and feed himself.

Yep... just give him the spoon and let him check it out. It's the only way he will learn.

Yep - let go and let be. You might also try him on super fine diced up finger foods such as bananas, cooked carrots, things of that nature.

Thanks everyone. I will try that. You think I could give him the Gerber Graduates diced carrots and stuff?

I wouldn't give him anything that big yet. Might be OK to cut them up into smaller pieces, but I'd start with something really soft like carrots.

It is a messy proposition learning how to eat. My dd didn't learn how to use silverware for a long time, and she's a pro with it now. He'll get it.

Another idea is to give him his own spoon and feed him with another. Worked with one of my boys perfectly...

Braylen still doesn't feed himself (except for finger foods) and I am in no hurry to try it either.

I was going to say the same, Dana. Kieran likes to hold his own spoon. It makes feeding him so much easier.

Yep I agree... AIdan has leanred how to 'feed' himself with thespoon, he know show to dip it and put it in his mouth ... but he makes a huge mess... and does it more to play than to actually get the food., I would feed him self 1st so he isnt starving and then just let him go to town on himself

I tried #3 Gerber this week, which has texture... he ate it fine but later puked alot - I know for me I will wait until he is more ready and stick to his 2's for now

Have you tried using the mesh bag to put solids in for him to use to chew?

I gave jimmy his own spoon and I had one and we would take turns. He's 4 and still hates to feed himself.
