Inhaler dosage question

The albuterol inhaler the doctor prescribed me seems to be helping a lot. But the dosage has me confused.

The doctor told me to use it until things cleared up, and then I shouldn't need it any more once my allergies were under control. I might not need both puffs.

The prescription was written for one inhaler (no refills). The doctors instructions say to take 2 puffs 4 times a day. The instructions that come inside the box say to follow the doctor's orders (of course) or as needed (but no closer than 3 hours apart).

I usually use it when I get up in the morning (6-6:30 AM), around lunch, when I get home from work, and at bedtime, unless I start wheezing and need it sooner. That's generally more than 3 hours apart. And usually just one puff at a time. Some days I don't need it but maybe once. And some days when the weather's whacky, I need it all four times.

The last couple of days, it's been really muggy and humid, and I've felt like I needed it all four times. I've also woken up at night (like 2 AM) wheezing and coughing and felt like I needed it during the night, too. And that's probably when I need it the worst. It's been more than 3 hours since I've used it, but at the same time, I've already had it 4 times a day. Is it Ok to take a puff again, or should I call the doctor and see what he says? With it not having any refills, I don't want to use it up too fast.

I am NO expert on this, brand new actually... (Shari you can probably weigh in on this one better) ... but one thing I know my dr did with Aidan, was wrote MORE of a rx - he actually wrote on the rc to give him the medication MORE frequently, but then gave me hand written directions with it telling me really how much to use... he said he over filled the rx for me, because insurance only covers refills every 30 days and he didn't want me to run low ... doesn't sound like this is what happened for you.

If you need it though, use it, and when you run low call- maybe they put no refills so they could monitor how fast you are using it to see if you need more?? or something different?

It should be ok... Albuterol is more of an "emergency" inhaler, rather than something to help treat a condition like ventolin, combivent, atrovent.... etc.

I'd run it by your MD's office. Perhaps they may want to give you something different.

I'm on multiple meds for my asthma.
The "instructions" for my albuterol is as follows:
Inhale 2 puffs every 4 hours or as needed

I usually never make the 4 hours. I usually have to take it more often. 1 inhaler typically last's me 3 weeks. (4 weeks if its a good month and my allergies aren't acting up.)
