Sitter application?

OK—This is weird.

I have this lady I’m going to talk to about babysitting tonight. I asked her if there was any information she needed from me, and she said no. She said that she had an application and we’d just go from there. HUH? I know she said that she asked you to sign something saying you’d pay because apparently she’s been stiffed for major money before. But that’s not a big deal. I’m just wondering what other information she wants. Kinda weird. I’m thinking it’s probably a general information sheet of some kind. And she might call and check with other sitters to make sure you paid them or something. But, other than that… What should I be expecting?

When we had Joey at a home daycare, she had us do an application. It was basically references if we had any (we didn't) and employment verification, to make sure we could pay. Then there were questions about Joey - food allergies, potty training, etc. Pretty basic, actually. Oh, and we did have to take his shot records over there, so she had a record of them, too.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I bet it's just what the ladies above said. I think sometimes parents forget that we (day care providers) are interviewing them as well. We try to learn as much as we can about the child/parents to protect ourselves and our families. That's why I'd much rather get clients through word of mouth rather than placing an ad. I've had some real loonies come through my door for interviews. Like the one woman who told me she was coming at 2 and at about 10 o'clock I noticed her crouched down by my dining room window trying to hear what was going on inside. Needless to say I canceled the interview.

Oh my gosh! You have got to be kidding!!!! Holy cow! Yeah, I'm thinking that would be one I wouldn't want, either.

You know, I'd probably do the same thing. I know my mom did when she was babysitting. But most of her kids were word of mouth, too. I think she did put in an ad a couple of times. But most of the kids she got were because she'd worked at the daycare and the parents' older kids had been in her class before.

This lady I went and visited the other day was a little loopy. I think that everything she did was a major red flag. She came to the door weaing something a little... uh... revealing. And then she said "This is about as dressed up as you'll ever see me. I normally wear pajamas." I was thinking if that was dressed up, I'd prefer the pajamas. Then Jonathan was playing with something and her daughter walked up and wanted it and so she took it away from him and gave it to her daughter. She told me that everybody thought that her daughter was spoiled, but that these were her daughter's toys and that the other kids just needed to learn how to share. I thought "Yeah, right." After she took the toy away from Jonathan, he started crying, and she said "Oh, so you have a whiner?" the she starts talking about her rules. The rules that apply to everybody but her kid. Ummm... I think it's time to go now... So, we cut that really short.

I've been trying to get a list together of sitters he's had and his teacher and all that. Including the ones that have moved, etc. I can't imagine what else they'd want.

You know it surprises me how many day care providers start the morning in their jammies. I could never! The thing with her daughter would have bugged me too. Good luck on your search!
