4 years old ... drop off at Birthday Party?

Ryan is 4 1/2 years old... He has gone to plenty of birthday parties but never an official 'play date' ... one where I drop him off and I come hoem to do my own thing. he is very shy and when we go to birthday parties it takes him a good hour or so to warm up even to his close friends and he stays by my side ...

He was invited to a party this weekend from a new boy in his daycare (this boy bit him last week, hard enough that he still has a mark) ... but Ryan still says he is his friend and kids will be kids and lose their temper - bite and hit, after all they are only 4 yeras old... The party is for the little boys sister, but they asked the boy if he wanted to invite anyone for him to play with. He invited Ryan.

The mom told me I could drop him off at the house, but ... if I really wanted too I could stay - but she did tell me there would be plenty of supervision...

I don't want to drop him off. For my sake. They have a pool, and with a ton of 6 year old girls there, I am worried someone may not pay attention to the 2 little boys ... I also think Ryan wouldnt want me to drop him off either.

If Ryan comes down with pink eye before then I wont have to worry at all because he wont be able to go ... but what should I do? Let Ryan make the decision ( I think he will say he wants me to stay) ... or do I let this be a learning experience for us BOTH?? But I have the fear of the swimming pool...

I personally wouldn't be comfortable with dropping off my 4 yr old at a stranger's house, pool or no pool .... especially if there's a history of aggressiveness. I don't allow my kids to hit/bite other kids and I sure wouldn't feel comfortable leaving them in an environment where I don't feel that there will be enough supervision to prevent it from happening again. Add the swimming pool to the mix and it's a big HELL NO! I think Jessi was at least 6 before I'd drop her off at a party, unless it was somebody that I knew very well and had no doubts that they'd supervise my child the way that *I* would supervise them.

Pink eye is sounding better and better, isn't it?

OK good ... that was what I was hoping ... and the pink eye has appeared to leave the family so it looks like I will be going with Ryan!

I would stay too. Hopefully Ryan won't let you go so you have a good excuse not to leave. Some people would get offended if you didn't trust them to leave your son with them. I don't think I would worry about that though. Your worries about the lack of supervision and the pool are good concerns.
