Past posts and PCOS conceiving again.

I was looking back at a lot of the pages from the very first one in this forum. It was really funny to see some of you talking about TTC and then look at your siggies and see when you had your babies. It's very interesting to see, if you have time I would suggest looking through the past post!

I really came looking for past post if anyone talked about PCOS, conceiving, then conceiving again. But I did not find anything in particular. Does anyone have experience with this?

Yes, I have 3 children. Any specific questions?

I conceived 3 times after being told I had PCOS. I already had one daughter and then lost 2 and finally carried to term with my DS who will be 5 in october.

I guess I really don't have any specific question... To conceive my DS I took all kinds of pills and then shots 2-3 times a day ending with a big shot in my bottom!! Yeah you know my DH loved doing that one for me!! With all that my system worked right and I now have my DS. He'll be 2 in September. They (the specialist) said that if we planned on having more and didn't mind them so close now (right after I had DS) would be the time because my body was still going to be working properly as a side effect of the pregnancy. Well, when my DS (who I was BF'ing) was 6 months old, I found out I was pregnant with DD!!

Now DD will be 1 in November and we'd like another, but we really don't know how long to wait before we should see a specialist again. We haven't been preventing getting pregnant from the time DD was born. Except of course the 3 months he was out to sea, that is one great form of BC!!

My PCOS was not easily diagnosed, because I am not the "classic" case. I'm not overweight, I didn't have excess hair growth, or any of the other signs. It wasn't until I seen the specialist for lack of periods that I was diagnosed.

So how far did you go between children and did you do anything special to conceive each one?? I'd also like to know if any one does or was told to do or take anything for the long term symptoms of PCOS?? Like the effects it has with your sugar levels and that sort of thing.

They didnt diagnose me till my daughter was around 3. There were issues around getting pregnant for her but somehow it happened without med intervention and back then they really didnt lknow much about PCOS like they do today. When she turned 5 I wanted another baby and due to lack of periods i had already been diagnosed with PCOS. So my ob went tight to chlomid and ulta sounds tomonitor ovulation then HCG shots to get the eggs to release.

I got pregnant the first try but miscarried around 7-8 wseeks. Waited a month and tried again. Got pregnant but miscarried this time around 5 weeks, very early. The test had just com eup + when I started to bleed and cramp. was devastaed and couldnt try fr a third. My marriage was very shaky dut to the stress of it all. I went on metformin and worked more on getting healthy rather then having another baby. Between the metformin and low carb somehow my hormones leveled off and I became regular and ended up pregnant on our own. I found out 2/16/01. I almost miscarried again because but by keeping on top of the dr I got on progesterone and was finally able to carry to term.

My sugar levels always looked great. It wasnt untill they ran my insulin level that they figured it all out. It was very high in order to keep my sugar normal. Also the levels from my ovaries were reversed. looking at them all individually everything was fine but when you put the whole thing together with the ultrasounds of my ovaries then it all fell intoplace. This was 7-8 years ago the this all began and I am not up on all the stuff now because knock on wood I seem to be doing good. so all the tests and tech terms are escaping me at the moment.

But I am happy, or not so happy , to say that I am regular and have been for 4 years and was able to loose 100 lbs. I do have days where I question weather or not my sugar is ok and I still get cystic acne from time to time but for having PCOS I think I am doing pretty good.

Ok Becky let me get this straight.... If the checked your sugar levels they would come up fine?? That's the glucose tests, right?? But if they checked your insulin that was all crazy??

I guess I'm asking because I know of one woman who stayed on the glucose med. long after she had her baby and is still on it last time I knew... So I'm wondering if there's somethng else I should be doing even though I'm not seeing a specialist to become pregnant. A few month a go I started having episodes where after I ate a meal I would get really light headed, dizzy, and even a couple times pass out for a minute or so.... They (my normal dr.) tested me for all kinds of things and even sent me for and MRI. All that and they couldn't find anything wrong with me.... So I can't help but wonder if something was missed because I don't think they have it noted that I am a diagnosed PCOS patient.... I'm still having these episodes, just I'm learning to live with it by taking it easy after I eat. But we moved and I don't wonder if I should see my new DR about all of this!!

yes you should always tell your Dr about anything that could be a problem. I too have those episodes that is whyh I said something about still having issues. I dont eat regularly like I shuld though and sometimes if I dont eat I can feel my sugar is low so then I eat and sometimes it feels almost as if I am bottoming out and have the dizzy, light headed, messed up feeling. If I am home I will lay down till it passes. I try not to eat a large lunch because that is when if effects me the most. I notice it more if I eat alot of carbs. I know it has to do with me not taking the best care of myself. With PCOS you are more suseptiable to problems such as diabetes, high blod pressure and a lot of other stuff that I cant really remeber at the moment. Also I was told because of the lack of ovulation and periods that can increase your risk of ovarian and uterine cancer but as long as you got AF 4 times a year you would be ok??? But that seems odd to me because they have so many differant BC's that can stop your periods. But like I said I have not really sought treatment in over 4 years. As long as my weight is stable and the episodes after I eat are minimal and infrequect I can deal with it. Probubly not the best option but for now I dont have the time to worry about it

What you describe about the carbs is exactly it for me! I noticed that pizza and s'getti are my main meals that give me that messed up feeling. And messed up describes it perfectly!! But that is why I had them check for diabetes TWICE!!! But everything came up fine. Is there a different test I should have them do?? I'm military so the insurance and money is not an issue. I would just like to get this taken care of. I have little ones that I worry about when I feel "messed up".
My SIL,she's an RN, said it sounded almost as if I was HypOglycemic. But not quite....

I worry about the long term care of the female stuff of PCOS as well... Like you said about the 4 periods a year and the cancer and all that... Well, before I was diagnosed I could count on 1 hand how many time I have had a period. And that's in the time span of almost 10 years! And the last 3 years I have been pregnant or breastfeeding. But what about when I'm done with all that. Should I be taking something to MAKE me have periods. Who in there right mind would WANT to have a peroid!! I guess if it's preventive against other more deadly things... But that's why I'd like to know!!!

All the information on the web is very vague about the whole condition. To try to look up anything and get a straight answer is non-exsistent!! Heck my original GYN hadn't even heard about it, and that 4 years ago now I think.... That's why I'm asking advice from other PCOS'ers. It seems like everyone has different knowlege and none of it is the same!!

I agree about having trouble finding answers. There are a few others on here that have PCOS as well. it would be interesting to be able to check your sugar during an episode. They pass pretty quickly, usually with in 30 mins and dont happen every day so its hard to figure out. The metformin I think for me just regulated my insulin. I know if I ate high carb or high fat when on it I would be in the bathroom.

I am at work right now but if you want to chat about it let me know. I am hoping some of the other PCOS gals will hope in here but they are not on everyday.

I would love to be able to check my sugar before I eat, after I eat, and about an hour later. You're right, these "episodes" only last maybe 30 minutes. Sometimes and hour tops. Like it's just enough time for your body to figure out what to do with what you just fed it. Like I said pizza is a bad one for me. I'm usually in the middle of my 2nd piece when I start feeling it. Most other meals it's not until I'm done and may even be 5-10 minutes after.... It's so nice to know I'm not going crazy!! Though I would love to get it diagnosed as something so I don't just seem like a lunatic!!

Glad I'm not the only one!

I got pregnant with my daughter in 02/03 no problem. Then she was stillborn at fullterm. I passed my glucose tests during the pregnancy, no symptoms, etc. Afterwards my periods were really irregular/absent. My ob ordered a full workup and discovered insulin resistence. My levels were fine but they took a longer than normal time to go back to normal after going up. She started me on Metformin. I've taken it ever since--through pregnancy and breastfeeding. I did see a specialist to get pregnant with my first son after the stillbirth. We ended up doing 2 IUI's. We moved forward so quickly with the procedure b/c we were grieving the loss of our daughter and I just "had to" get pregnant. We had a healthy son in 04. My specialist said to come see him when I wanted to have another baby so I planned to as soon as I stopped nursing. Right before Zach's 1st b-day I called and made an appt to touch base figuring he'd wean soon. He weaned at 1 year 2 weeks and I showed up 2 weeks later for my appt already pregnant ON MY OWN! My doc was so happy, never mind us. We had our second, healthy son, this past May. My specialist is a researcher at Yale University on PCOS and he recomended that I stay on the met while prego and nursing. He said if it was his wife or daughter that is what he'd do. After Noah was born I talked to my ob about what to do and we decided I'd see an endocrinologist to see if the met was enough or too much (I take 1000, 2xs a day). My appt is at the end of Aug.

Ok so from the sounds of it I just need to make an appt. with a doctor and see what they say. (If they even know anything about PCOS)

One of the things I remember most about talking with my specialist is that the cyst on ovaries can become very dangerous to ones health. And that was one of the first things we worked at, getting the number of cyst down. Seeing as they don't do ultrasound on your ovaries unless they have a really good reason to, I can't help but wonder what mine look like at this point. And if I should be doing something about them.

I guess what got me going with all of this is I've been feeling some very acute pain, like cramps but not really. For the last 10 days or so off and on. I know it has something to do with my female organs!! I'm just concerned as to what!! At first I thought maybe I could actually be pregnant and that's what I was feeling going on in there. But 10 days??? Seems too long for that.... So now I'm getting concerned!

If you have PCOS or even ppelvic pain there shouldnt be a problem getting an ultra sound. I had to get prior med records about 9 years ago and they went back till age 20 I think and even back then I had cystic ovaries so it amazed me it took till I was 25 for them to figure it out. I get cysts but mine have never needed med attention. Meaning that they are small and usualy take care of them selves. When I ovulate on my right side it can be very paind full for 24-48 hours and I can tell when its more cyst then egg releasing. I am bad though I have been for one pap since my son was born in 01 and yes it was recent. I had a scare with that one so I will go regularly from now on and all of this talk has me wondering if I should remind them of my pcos and get all of that checked out. It seems as though once you are done having babies the dr's seem to let it go by the way side and you need to keep on them.

Oh and yes I would get into a DR. Call a few and see if they deal with PCOS. I did go to an endo for a consult but they felt my OB had a good handle on it. He was great. He deals alot with infertility and doesnt mess around if you are trying to get pregnant.

Yeah my problem is I'm military. They pay for everything wonderfully, 1) long as they think you need it and 2) if you follow all the steps in the right order and on their time!!!

And the chance of the dr. they assigned me to know about PCOS..... Probably pretty slim. And like you said, it seems like once your done with the baby making part they seem to forget or not care about the PCOS and it's long term effects. And right now that's where I'm stuck.

I have PCOS but never was able to get pregnant. After 5-6 long hard rollercoaster years of temping, taking Metformin, taking fertility drugs, and many trips to the ob-gyn or a fertility specialist I decided to go childless and started looking at the benefits of that.

I hate Metformin so I don't even take that anymore. I'm on birth control pills now to try to regulate my periods in hopes they won't be too heavy.
