Is it possible?

So, yesterday we found out that my mom has a serious vein infection--underside of her left forearm from the bend of her elbow down to almost her wrist is bright red, swollen, hard as a rock, and hot to the touch. It's been painful for her to move her arm or use it. We don't know if there is an infection in her blood yet. They did cultures at the hospital, but we won't know anything until Monday at the earliest.
Here's my question:
About a month or five weeks ago, my mom's leg (shin area) and top of her foot had similar symptoms as her wrist. Red, sore, very painful, etc. She CLAIMS she mentioned this to the physician's assistant when it was going on, and that the PA told her to alternate with ice and the heating pad because it was a circulation problem. It did get better.
BUT, I wonder, could the infection have started then? Could that have also been an infection like the one in her arm, just not as severe?

Tammy, I'm not sure but I had one in my arm after Molly was born. Mine was from the iv. I didn't get it for at least a week after the iv came out but it was the same symptoms you described. I guess it's fairly common to pick it up in the hospital. I had a course of very strong antibiotics and kept moist heat on it as much as I could.
