FURIOUS with ASP!

The first day of school, we dropped Brandon off and John picked him up. Yesterday he rode the bus in the morning and does ASP in the afternoon. Around 4:30, John gets there to pick him up. He goes to the office and the guy calls down to the room he is in and says he is ready to be picked up. 10 minutes passes. The guy calls again and says he is still waiting on Brandon. The teacher replies that she already sent him up. There is a mother in the office who overhears. She says, there is a little boy walking out in the parking lot. John asks if he has on a red shirt. She says yes. He goes hauling butt out into the parking lot to find Brandon climbing into the 4 runner. The teacher just let hm out of the room, didn't tell him where to go, so he went out the exit door (right next to the classroom) and goes all along the side of the school, to the front, and out into the parking lot to find dad. HE WAS OUTSIDE FOR 10 MINUTES BY HIMSELF wondering where daddy was and looking for the car. John was pis$ed. Took Brandon inside as the guy comes back saying oh you found him. John says Yeah I found him, I found him in the parknig lot. He says I want to talk to someone about this. The guy takes him to the office, where he tells some lady what happens and all she can say is she'll take care of it and goes back to what she was doing.

So my job this morning is to raise holy he!!. I am so freaked out by this. THANK GOD nothing happened. To make it worse, it was voting day and the school is a voting place. What if someone had grabbed him? No one would have none, as there were strangers all over. What if he had gotten hit by a car? I mean WTF?? I am still so mad. I have been told to call the VP because it is hard to get the principal. I am going to tell them Brandon is not to leave that room without a teacher walking him out or his dad or me coming to the room to get him. It is not acceptable that they do not have enough staff to cover ASP. You don't just send a kid out of the room with nerry an explanation as to where to go. My mind is so racing with the what-ifs.

I don't know what time to call. God help them if I don't get the response I am looking for. The 2nd day, and they are going to call me a problem parent!

Wow, I can't believe they would just let him out like that! When I worked for an After School Program, the parent had to come to one of the aides, sign the kid out, and the kid was given straight to the parent. I'd be furious too!

I would call .. but send an email too. After all my school issues in the past .. if they respond in an email you have it in "writing".

In the past we went directly to the ASP room and picked up the kids there .. had to sign them out there?!?!

Our after school program was the same as Meghan's. The parent had to see the teacher and sign the child out. We had up to 6th grade and they ALL had to do that. It was a state law!

I talked to the principal. She said she will take care of it, seemed understanding, but that could have been the "make the parent happy" tone. I told her I do not want him to leave the room without the teacher, an aide or John getting him. She agreed it shouldn't have happened, apologized and said she would talk to the directors immediately and tell them if they didn't already know. I guess we will see what happens today. Although I am looking for someone in the neighborhood to watch him so he can ride the bus home instead.

I hope that the principal takes care of it!

I would be mad too and also raise a stink. They should know better than that.

O M G! I would have hit the roof! Make sure you put something in writing so you have it for your records and have someone at the school sign for it!

I would be SO mad!! I'm so glad nothing happened to him.

Yes, I agree. Go up there AND email them, too. I liked email communication as a teacher, and I think it's good for all involved so there is a record of everything.
As for what happened HOW IRRESPONSIBLE of that teacher! And how incredibly scary for you and John. I would be livid.
I hope you got to vent your frustration, concern, and anger to these people!

Everything went well yesterday. There were teachers in the hall directing the kids. Thank god!! The woman John spoke to about the incident when it happened apologized to him. So that was good.

She needed to apologize. She was flippant and rude. I am glad they had teachers out and have tried to fix the situation.

I'm sorry that happened. I would be so pissed!
