"Lunchables" ideas?

My kids aren't really into sandwiches, but they love the Lunchables. Of course, those are quite expensive to eat on a daily basis, so I told them that I'd try to make some homemade ones this year (poor kids! )

The ham/turkey, cheese and crackers are simple enough, but they love the Pizza ones. What can I use for the crust? I know I just need to get some of those little plastic take out containers (like for salad dressing) for the sauce, but the crust has me stumped.

Any other "Lunchable" ideas for fun food that kids will eat?

You could always get pizza dough, the canned stuff and premake the little pizzas. Just cut them smaller and go ahead and bake them. I am actually thinking of doing something along those lines because my kids love them too.

You could do like Shona said, or, you could buy the crusts that are already baked and everything, just use a biscuit cutter or something round to cut them out. I'm not sure how much thoses crusts are, I've never bought them, but they'd really be a time-saver!

A thought just occured to me ... how about those pilsbury refrigerated bread sticks? Guess I wouldn't have to worry about the mozzarella that way! You know .. I've used that pizza dough to make breadsticks as well! How about cutting them sort of like calzones, then filling with a bit of mozzarella, then give them sauce to dip in?

They also love salads, as long as there is plenty of ranch. I think I'll need to get some little plastic containers and prefill them with salad, then I definitely need to find those take out thingys for dressing!

I bought several little plastic salad bowls from the dollar store for Cori to take to school. There is a seperate spot built into them for the dressing to go. I love them!

The pillsbury breadsticks would work well, or you could cut a pita into wedges, or even just slice an english muffin for the crust.

Bobili's (can't spell it) makes the premade crusts that are JUST LIKE the store bought lunchables. I've used them since Chase was in Elementary school .. really inexpensive and the kids love them!

Thanks for all the great ideas! I'm going to check out my dollar store for those salad things ... they aren't the ones that look like a big sports cup with the dressing in the lid, are they Jen?

I also just remembered that the Japan restaurant I do bookkeeping for has those little plastic "souffle" cups for their sauces. I'm going to ask him if I can have a few of those for dressings, tomato sauce, etc.

Would love to hear some other ideas about things besides pizza and ham & cheese crackers! What other unusual things do you guys pack for your kids?

What about using a tortilla for the crust? Or just using a tortilla to make a wrap or something?

I was gonna suggest just using mini bagels, englich muffins, or tortillas or a Boli crust cut into what ever shapes your kids want for the pizza.
As for other Ideas my kids love wraps. to keep them in shape I use a thin layer of cream cheese(or the flavored CC) on the tort....add my kids favorite toppings(lunch meats, hotdogs and cheese, crumbled ground beef,PB, chicken nuggets,etc...) roll in up(make sure the closing egde doesn't have any topping so the cream cheese sticks) and cut it into a couple pieces, then I find a "dip" to go with the wrap(ranch or honey mustard dressing, ketchup, fruit spreads for the PB,etc....) The cream cheese doesn't "spoil" as quick as mayo, or get as nasty and the plain goes with just about everything. You can sneak veggies and fruit in the wraps(my kids love the CC, PB with diced apples dipped in grape fruit spread or jelly, and I have managed to cook shredded veggies(carrots, squash) in with the ground beef and sneak them in the wraps and they didn't notice....you can also sneak in the "colored" torts which are made with tomato or spinach.

Another "lunchable" idea is take a small container of yogurt then pack "mix ins" like granola, fruits, dry cereals, etc., throw in gome graham cracker sticks,a box of juicey juice and a pack of fruit snacks or roll-up for dessert and they are good to go!

I was going to say english muffins, because I have actually dont that before. Or cut up bagels.

My kids get hot lunch and since I am the lunch lady I wont be making cold lunch.

Those are some great ideas, Britney. I'll try some of those with Jerome, even though he has been happy with a cheese sandwich every day LOL
