Another lunch question .. ice packs?

I so wish my kids ate PB&J so that I wouldn't have to stress anymore!

When you send stuff like ham and cheesee, leftovers, etc with your kids for lunch, do you stick an ice pack in it? Do you worry about food poisoning? Last year, Jessi didn't eat lunch until 1:00 ... so her lunch sat there from 6am when it was made, until 1pm with no refrigeration. Granted, I bought her one of those insulated lunch boxes, but most days, I ended up sticking in an ice pack so I wouldn't worry about her.

Am I being paranoid?

For meats and dairy I would definitely use an ice pack. I would be too paranoid!

Nope - not paranoid. I send ice packs as well - with an insulated lunch box.

Glad to know I'm not a total freak! Where's the best place to get them? I've been using the little sticks that came in some of the sports bottles and I have a few of the gel packs that came with the diaper bags way back when, but Cody is bad about not bringing them back home (I assume they are probably in the trash). Is there something inexpensive at Walmart or somewhere?

I picked up a few of the cute little chaped ones at Target for $.79 each .. that way Kale remembers to keep them.

Oh and you know if your child is taking a lunch .. pack a freezepack .. nobody likes warm kool-aid!!

We had some cute shaped ones, too, when DH used to take his lunch to work. We had a green lifesaver, an oreo, and a golf ball. They were all about 4 inches tall and about an inch wide. I think I might have paid 97 cents for them at Wal-Mart. Or you can use those blue gel soft packs kinda like they have for injuries and stuff. I have one that came with my pyrex dishes, and we use it for everything.

I think I may try freezing their juicepacks and see how that works! Great idea!

Walmart had colorful ones for $0.84 we picked up a bunch last year.

Joey's lunch was at 10:30 last year so I didn't worry about it, but when I was in school many moons ago, I would spend Sunday night making sandwiches, and put them all in the freezer. Each day, I'd take out a frozen sandwich and put it in my lunch bag. By lunch time, it had just defrosted.

Of course, this ONLY works with meat/cheese type sandwiches. PB&J doesn't freeze well.

I used to do that, and they complained the juice was still frozen. I think I might have packed an ice pack as well, so maybe that was the problem.

This is a problem we will NOT have. Mike's medication comes with 2 freezer packs every month. I have so many I don't know what to do with them It won't even matter if I lose one somewhere.
