Birth plan

Just wondering, did anyone write out a birth plan? I read about them when I was pg with the boys, but I never wrote one. I am thinking maybe I should have, in case something went wrong, but then I think I always have my mouth to tell them, and if I can't tell, are they really going to read it???

They do read it. I had one with dd. I think I downloaded it from Baby Center. I am definitely going to have one this time, because I know I will be unconcious for at least a couple of hours and I have rude inlaws to deal with.

No. Nothing ever goes as planned in my life anyway.

I asked my doctor about it and he said I could write one, but once I got to the hospital, they'd take a detailed account of what I wanted and what I didn't, unless it was an emergency, and then it wouldn't matter because they'd follow emergency procedures.

So, I didn't write one. And I ended up having a C-section because of complications anyhow, so it wouldn't have done much good.

The only reason I wanted to write one was because I didn't want anyone in the room except DH when I was checked and when I gave birth. But I didn't want to look like the bad guy. The nurses took all of that information down when I got there. And they were good about doing what I asked, for the most part. Of course, the day I actually gave birth, I got a nurse I really didn't care for, so... if I go through all this again, I am asking my doctor to make sure he gets a different nurse on my case.

DH and I had a birth plan that was invaluable to us since we wanted to try natural childbirth and attachment parenting. It's critical that you are very explicit with your requirements if you plan to deviate from the hospital's regular process in any way.

Our OB/GYN was great in going over our plan with us and filing it with the hospital ahead of time so there were no surprises for the staff. We ended up having to go c-section in the end, but our birth plan covered so much more than just the delivery. And though some staff members were reluctant or tried to change our minds on things to make thier job easier, they always complied to our wishes in the end.

If you want to see a copy of our plan, I would be happy to share it with you. It covers a lot including labor, medications, inducing, c-section, episiotomy, postpartum, breastfeeding and cirmucision.

Nope I didnt have one either. My dr is awesome and I have gotten pretty lucky with nurses that do as I wish.

I didn't have one, because I didn't know of one.

We did one with Brandon when you warned about EVERYTHING in our labor classes. It mostly said stuff like we didn't want him vacuumed out if possible, etc. Didn't do one with either of the others, because I knew they would be c-sections.

I didn't do one because I didn't feel the need. It didn't matter to me who was in the room with us when I was checked or when I was giving birth, just as long as my husband and the doctor were there. My doctor was well aware that I wanted an epidural, and as soon as I got to the hospital, I told the nurse I wanted one. Kyle knew I wanted to breastfeed, but as it turns out, as soon as they got Emily out (I ended up with an emergency c-section), I was asked, and so they knew she would be breastfed.
Kyle knew what I wanted and didn't want, so I knew if I could not speak for myself, between him and my friend Terri, my desires would be known.
I tend to be very vocal, so I wasn't worried about it.

I printed one out from a place online too, but after I filled it all out and took it to my doctor, they just basically told me they couldn't do any of it. Their main reason was that it was easier on the doctor another way. Well, by all means I would like to make the doctor comfortable! That's the main reason I am using a birth center this time. Hopefully your doctor is more understanding than mine was.

I had a midwife the first two times and am now in another office with doctors. Both my boys were so fast, that nothing really mattered. The only thing I didn't like was that it took so long with both of them until they came back after being born. But they said they needed to warm up, first.

Re: Birth plan

Your Caregiver
  • one for your office chart
  • one to send with your records to the birthing site
Your Support People (one copy)
The birthing site (pack these in your suitcase as soon as you make the final copies)
  • One to give to the admitting staff
  • One to keep in your birthing room
Your labor coach, if that person isn't your partner (packed in your suitcase)
Yourself In total, you should make at least seven copies. It doesn't hurt to have extra copies with you at the hospital.

Birth plan

It having a birth plan is so important if you feel strongly about having the birthing process go a particular way,as you should.Unfortunately, having a plan doesn't always guarantee it's going to happen just so.But I think your story is one to tell and that soon to be parents can learn from.As per my experience they do read it.After we can not be sure.

Re: Birth plan

If you have a birth plan, make sure that you have other itinerary because not all the things that you are planning about would surely happen, right?

I agree with you. Planning is useless when not applied so careful considerations should be think first.
