Pre Reading skills

Like the baby who must learn to crawl before he can walk, the preschooler must attain certain milestones before he can open up the world of words. Reading readiness comes with developmental maturity.

I was looking for an article that listed specfic skills that kids need to work on to have for pre reading. I found one from my state department of education last night and then I couldn't find it again to post today.

Here is a bit of a specific list from the article -

Quote:
“Learning to read should not be an academic endeavor,” stresses Sullivan. “All pre-reading activities should be kept playful.”

For example, she suggests singing rhyming songs, reading favorite stories over and over, or playing games which challenge children to find objects with similar sounding names.
I was a bit concerned because my MIL sent me Hooked on Phonics and I felt dd wasn't ready for it yet. I'm glad I waited after reading this article. It's a good article even if it does not include a list of specific things to do to help your prereader.

That's how Jessi learned to read. We started out with Green Eggs & Ham (over and over and over and over and .... ). When she was 4, she took it to PreK for Show N Tell and "read" her favorite book. After awhile, she started guessing at words based on the letters in them.
