My poor little Ian hasn't had a BM since wednesday morning.
I still have to suppliment him but not as much as I was. I have learned to nurse longer.
The thing is, he has gas, so bad he could clear soldier field!
He is the stinkiest baby I have ever known. I have also been having al ot of gas. Ihave looked over what I have been eating, and can't find anything that might cause this. Except maybe the apple juice I have been drinking.
So as of right now, no more juice for me.
When I took Ian to the doc friday morning, he checked his tummy and did a rectal exam. He said Ian's muscles were just a little tight and to put neosporin on his rectum, and he should have a BM in a few days. Still nothing yet. anyone else been here, or have any advice for me? I don't want to go to formula alone, but it hurts thinking that my milk is making his tummy hurt

It's more likely that the formula is making his tummy hurt then it is your milk. It's quite possible that he doesn't tolerate the lactose or another ingredient in the formula. I would suggest before you give up nursing, you discuss switching formula, you might even have to consider the soy version.Of coarse you would want to talk to his dr. first, and maybe even consult a lactation counseler in your area to see if it's even possible for it to be your milk(which I seriously doubt). How have his BM's been up until now. are they more like breast milk bm's(yellowish, loose) or more solid and yucky like formula. My other suggestion is make sure YOU drink lots of water, the more you drink the more likely to flush any gas producer's out of you system(not to mention keep your milk supply up.). I hope this helps a little. And I hope that little guy gets comfortable soon.

I totally agree with Bridget. It is most likely the iron in the formula that would be causing the hard stools or making him not go. He is probably just gassy cuz he really needs to have a bm. Poor lil guy!! Breastfed babies tend to have really loose stools, like Bridget said, really yellow, loose and smells kinda sweet. Good luck and i hope that things get better soon! My advice would to just continue to mainly bf him.

Kale had a real problem with BM's for about a month ... on and off. We exclusively breastfed and the doctor said it was definetly not the breastmilk. Kale probably was having problems with his digestive system ... Kale is on Zantac for his acid reflux and it has helped with his BM's too. As long as they go once in 7 days ... they should be fine. That sounds too long for me, so we bought some Glycerin suppositories and after a day or two ... his movements became more regular. And now that he is on solids . They are much more regular. I would definetly call the doctor and talk to him about Ian .... maybe slack off on the formula a little more and even try the suppositories ... they are very mild and usually help. Sorry you guys are going through this. It was very hard on us too!

Thanks everyone!! Well, I now have a new problem. I think my milk is drying up.

Starting last night, when I pump, I now get less than an oz. And that is with both breasts. And When he nurses, he swallows on one breast, but just suckles at the other. And today he has been soooo hungry after nursing, even after 45 minutes to an hour.
I just don't know what to do. I am calling the lactation expert tomorrow.
Thank you for the advice on his BM's. If he hasn't had one by tomorrow morning, I am calling the doc again. My pharmacist (a really great guy) made me buy some suppositories, but said to wait til I call the doc to use them, and if I didn't need them, to bring them back.
