Where does your baby sit in the car?

This is going to lead into a big rant but I wanted to find out first where other people have their infants carseat installed in their car.
when the boys were infants we always put them in the backseat in the middle.

Emily has always been in the backseat in the middle. Once the baby comes, she will move over behind me, and the baby will be in the middle.
Why? What happened?

Okay, Brenna sits behind the passenger seat for tons of reasons... the two cars seats (hers and Zachs) do not fit properly in the car if the bulky infant seat is in the middle, I can see her which is important to me since she has reflux, I can reach her to pop her paci back in her mouth, and I don't have to adjust the passenger seat each time I put her in which I would have to with the driver seat.
So anyway, Haley sits in the middle and Zach's seat is behind the driver seat. I went to drop them off at school this morning, reached back and opened up the back seat door, and let the kids out on the opposite side that the sidewalk is on. A teacher comes up to the car and says "You need to let them out on the other side". I said "I can't because of the baby". She says "Can't you move the carseats?". NO I CAN'T! and I told her that. I actually said "No, because I can't see the baby when she is behind me". The teacher looked at me, said "It's a safety concern", and walked off. It's not really a huge safety concern... they are getting out of the car in a controlled single file line of one way traffic with tons of other parents and teachers around. It takes them 30 seconds to get to the sidewalk. I could fix that 30 sec. inconveniece and "safety concern" and then go through an entire of day of inconvenience and safety concerns with my infant.
It just really irritated the crap out of me.
Tomorrow I should go pull up, turn the car off (because it's a safety concern to leaving it running with children alone in it), walk around the car to the passenger side, take Brenna and her carseat out of the car, and then let my kids get out on the passenger side. Then of course I have to put Brenna back in and walk back around to the other side, the entire time backing up traffic, and restart my car before pulling out.

I'd tell the teacher to mind her own business. As long as its a safe like you mentioned where its controlled traffic - then whats the big deal?

I have a van so the baby always get the spot closet/easist to the door so I can get the seat in & out. (I only have 1 sliding door)

i agree with Karen!!

to that aide!

The only problem I could see is if it ends up like at our school. Cars are supposed to line up single file and proceed in order, but most of the time, somebody gets impatient and zips around the cars that are still unloading because they already shoved their kids out the door and don't want to wait for everyone else to finish.

If there isn't room for that to happen, then I really don't see what the issue is as long as they walk around in front of *your* car.

Isaiah sits behind me in his car seat.

Well, you could just hop out and open the door for Haley from the outside to let her hop out and walk infront of your own car. That way you can keep a good eye on her in case another car comes out of the line.

You could also let her ride in the front, but I think you shouldn't really do that until they are 12.

eli is behind the driver, braylen is behind the passenger and rhyne is in the very back row of seats.

I would tell that teacher to get real!

Dd sits behind the driver when we are in the van. The baby will be behind me. Dd's seat is hard to get in and out of the car and the baby seat will be in and out of the car all the time. It's easier to have the baby closer to the door.

I think you should get one of those hand held stop signs and hold that while walking your children in front of your car. That teacher sounds like she doesn't actually have children.

ARGH that would have made me crazy!!!!

I can tell you in my car, Aidan is behind me, and Ryan is on the other side... in my car though (CRV) Ryan can get out of Aidans side any time I need him too, he just goes under the carseat.

Scotts car is the opposite. Aidan is behind the passenger and Ryan is behind the driver.

Child safety seats should never be in the front seat of a car, especially ones with airbags. If an airbag should go off, the child could be killed. By law, children under the age of 12 should be in the backseat. Check out the laws in your state. Also, fire departments and police departments help parents learn how to safely install car seats in their vehicles and do checks to make sure they are done correctly. Perhaps if you checked with one of these depts., they could help you configure your car seats so they can both be installed in the back.

They are both in the back... just at opposite doors instead of the infant seat being in the middle like I would prefer.

I don't think that you should be letting your kids get out in the street and walk around the car by them selves. I think that you should at least get out of the car and see them safely to the sidewalk. That's what I would do if it were me.

Just to clarify things...
There is a row of 5 teachers standing at the edge of the parking lot, they let 5 cars pull up at a time and one teacher assists each car in getting their children out, shutting doors, etc. to prevent the parents from having to get out and delay the line of traffic. We have a cop at each end of the line directing traffic and keeping people moving in the right direction.
The only thing my children are doing is getting out on the drivers side of the car instead of the passenger side where the school would prefer them to. They aren't walking through a busy street unattended, sitting in the front seat of the car, or anything else irresponsible on my part.
I CAN'T SEE OR REACH MY INFANT WHO HAS BAD REFLUX IF SHE IS SITTING BEHIND ME... that is the only point that I want the school to understand and to be open to excepting that not all families can comply to their preffered method.

Definately don't move your baby! She needs to be where you can see and reach her. I just wouldn't be able to trust that the other cars, teachers, etc. to watch out for my kids if they were to get out of the car into the street. I would have to get out with them and walk them to the sidewalk.

They will just have to understand Elaine! What else can you do? If it really bothers them then I would just get out until she gets to the sidewalk.

At the boys school we have an unattended drop off line(there is a teacher in the afternoon by the front door of the school but thats very far away from the pick up/drop off area). It works out great. I see kids all the time get out the driver side and go to the sidewalk.

One of my older boys sit in the front(they rotate), then Kiera is behind the passenger, Nick is behind the driver, and the other two boys are in the back row.

In my car, DD is behind the passanger seat, DS is behind the drivers. In DH car I think it's the same way. I liked having DS in the middle but the car seats are to big to place next to each other. I would just let the yard lady be upset, you can only do so much for the schools. I would think of #1 and that is my baby. Just smile and say whatever...

I don't think you should move Brenna, Elaine. I think that the school is going to have understand your situation.

Brianna sits behind the driver's seat and Kaitlyn and Anthony are in the very back with Anthony's seat right behind Brianna's seat. We removed the second seat beside Brianna so it would be easier to strap the kids in and also get them in and out.
