Anaemia

Well at my last visit to the clinic they took some blood tests and have told me I have anaemia. I started panicking but then she told me it is common in pregnancy and is why I have been feeling so tired and weak lately, she advised me to take folic acid tablets which I am now doing. Has anyone else experienced this during pregnancy and is there anything else I can do as well as taking folic acid?

TIA

I had anemia with at least one of my pregnancies. They had me taking extra iron tablets. I've never heard of taking folic acid for it though

I think they are iron and folic acid tablets (iron folate?). My memory is completely shattered.

Fortunately, I did not have that problem. I understand the iron pills can be irrating to the stomach.

I had to take extra iron wiht my first. I was also told to drink OJ when I took it rather than say milk cause the OJ helped in the absorbstion of it.

I was anemic with my first. Other than the Iron Folate, eating foods high in iron will help as well. Google it. Legumes, liver (ew) spinach.. there are other foods high in iron that taste better LOL.

Exactly what I was thinking, Dawn. I have a friend who is always anemic when pregnant, and her doctor had her take iron.

Oh yeah, don't take it with calcium because calcium hinders the body's absorption of iron.

Yeah.. I had to take extra iron tablets with both of my pregnancies. They can be hard on the stomach and the ones I had were horse pills.

I drink low sugar OJ in the morning and I take a CVS brand childrens chewable with iron in the morning. I chew 2 of them and it seems to be helping some. Not as much as the adult ones do but I can't stand the constipation.

I fight anaemia all the time. Sometimes it takes everything I have just to get up.

I am always anemic - pregnant or not- I would say I am anemic about 2-3 times a year - it means you need extra iron and it makes you feel fatigued... however I can not take straight iron pills (make me throw up and constipate me all at the same time) . Increase your iron FOOD intake too - that should help
