Question for the teachers

My dd is having some trouble recognizing the difference between the ( and 6. I have dyslexia and those are hard numbers for me too. What are some tricks to help her learn letters and numbers that look similiar?

Haley mixed up a lot of letters and numbers well into elementary school. I'm not sure about 6's & 9's but for b's and d's we wrote the word bed and drew the outline of a bed around it to help her remember. As she got older she could just picture in her head that the "b" was the headboard and the "d" was the footboard.

That's a great idea Elaine! I'll have to try that with TJ to see if it helps him.

He actually writes his entire alphabet backwards ... and from right to left. It's really odd looking.

Is TJ left handed? Anna is and she still struggles with writing things backwards sometimes. She used to write her name backwards too, but with a name like Anna is wasn't too bad She still will sometimes write 21 instead of 12 and reverses her 6's.

For Kate's age, I think it is very normal to be reversing letters. I've heard of Elaine's trick with b and d before. Your can also make a b with you left hand and a d with your right hand and put them together in the middle. It looks kind of like a bed that way too.

Yes, he is, which is why I figure it's probably fairly normal. Gotta say though ... he can still spell MOM without any problems!
