I was surprised to find out that our lunches cost more than areas I assumed had higher costs of living. Let's compare notes and see how much school lunch is in your area!

for all grades here its 1.25/lunch and .75/breakfast. Our lunch program gets no fundung from the school district. Our taxes do not go towards this at all. They are totaly seperate from the school system, found that out the other night at parents night. She also said everyone should fill out the forms for free reduced lunches bc they get govt funding from those forms. It is what the gov uses to judge poverty level when funding lunch programs. more lower income familes = more govt funding which brings down the lunch prices for the parents.

We only have hot lunch once a month and it is $1.50. (It's a fund raiser for the school and we donate everything for the lunch, so it costs us more thwn $1.50)

I don't know. I assume it's the same as for Dawn. This got me thinking and I remember back in the old days when I was in K my lunch cost 45 cents. How I remember that I don't know. I can't remember what happened last week!

I want to say it's $2 for lunch, but Jerome doesn't want to buy his lunch, so I wouldn't know.

I think all of NC is required to provide breakfast for free. The kids have free lunch this year so I'm not really sure how much it is but we paid $1.45 back in Person County.

Nope .. no free breakfast here, although we had it in Alamace county. I can't believe we are so much more expensive than everyone else!

Nothing here is free.
Brady's school has a lunch order form every couple months, and you have to pay in advance.
And the lunches are maybe (depending on what it is) anywhere ,say from 1.75 for a pizza, small so he needs 2. Some things are more. Too much money to pay all in one lump sum.
He takes lunch from home. They have microwaves in classrooms, so that's good anyway.

I *wish* we had microwaves available to them here! That would make SUCH a difference in what I could send it!!

Elementary school is $1.75

Jr. High/ High School is somewhere around $2 if they get the lunch tray, or different prices if they get a la carte items like french fries or salads.

Our school lunches are expensive. It is $2.25 here (not sure what breakfast is). My children bring their lunches to school because the school lunches don't give them enough food. Also, our school lunches consist of things like chicken nuggets, patties or tenders, cheeseburgers, hotdogs, pizza, meatball subs etc. and just don't seem very nutricious.

We have a lot of the same things here ... although everything is baked (at least in elementary) as opposed to fried. What types of foods do you send to school that is more nutritious Sammi? I can never think of anything that is actually better than what the school serves, although I'd like to!

Dawn, I send a sandwich on whole grain bread, then I add things like cheese sticks (low fat, a good source of calcium and protein), a fruit cup, a piece of fruit, yogurt, peanut butter on whole grain crackers or cheese and crackers, pretzels, low fat granola bars, special K bars, Nutri-grain bars, carrot sticks and dip or hummus, jello cups, things like that. I try to stick to low fat desserts like the special K bars and jello cups etc. I also sometimes send soup in a thermos or cold pasta salad or any kind of left over that does not need to be re-heated. I use ice packs in their lunch boxes to keep things cold. It would be so much easier for me if my kids too hot lunch but since our schools serve mostly fast-food fare that doesn't seem to me to have a lot of nurtitional value even if they do add a piece of fruit I end up sending their lunches. They do get school milk with their lunches, though.

Thanks for the ideas!

Foccacia is also another good idea (it is sort of like pizza but does not need to be heated) My kids love it!

I'm in Hickory, NC. It is $1.60 in elementary, breakfast is 80 cents. Kindergarteners get free breakfast (this is the third year in a row). You get a little discount if you pay it by the month.
$2.50 but everything is more expensive here. Where I work (in the city) our whole school is below the poverty level so everyone gets free breakfast and lunch. If they had to pay it would be $2.00.
