Does ANYONE have any kind of suggestion on how to teach kids to tie their shoes????

Austin still can't tie his shoes, and I'm neyong frustrated. He's just not getting it.

We could use all the help we can get at this point.

Thanks so much ladies.. I'm sure that he's not the only one.. granted he's probably the only 1st grader. All of the kids in his class can tie their shoes..

He's so uncoordinated.

Ive been reading around on 'teachers' websites and stuff about how to teach kids to tie their shoes, and most of the teachers are saying things like it's not their place to teach kids, and that they refuse to tie shoes...

I remember being in 1st grade and our teacher taught us how to tie shoes. I knew how to already, but I remember learning in school.

I know you need to teach your child to be independant, but what if your child is just like mine, and is sooo uncoordinated, that even walking down the street without falling down is an issue???

i know that the kindergarten teacher will tie his shoes.. but he has to be able to get his winter boots on/off, outerwear on/off and so on.

I have no idea. I always thought we'd have an issue and Kev showed Alyssa one time and I showed her one time and she got it (with some practice. )

I know here the kindergarten teacher is working with them to learn to tie them. (she told me at registration that my Christmas they would all be able to tie their own shoes - but she knew Alyssa could already tie hers as last year in Preschool she was helping the teacher tie other kids shoes )

There is a book out there that has a shoe on it with laces and a story or peom to go with it (and laces on the book) so you can practice with a story.

I was older too before I could tie mine.

He is not the only 1st grader, Jerome can't tie his shoes, either.
We are trying to bribe him, but he doesn't want to try. He is patiently waiting to all of the sudden know how to do it. (that's how he is with most things, though)

Give him more time, he will get it at some point, and do what we do, get velcro shoes.

Have you tried the rabbit through the hole method?

Where you take one side make it the loop, take the other one and go around the "tree" and put the "rabbit" through the hole. That's how I learned and have taught people.

Otherwise I know some people use 2 loops and tie them that way too.

Good luck.

I have a shoe tying book for Darien that we got through the Scholastic book club. He is working on learning, but it is a difficult thing. He wears velcro shoes to school. (The teacher told the parents at Kindergarten day that if your child can't tie their shoe they need to wear velcro)

I remember there was some sort of rhyme we learned when I was learning how to tie my shoes over 30 years ago.

I'm no help, because my son was 7-1/2 before he could tie his shoes I tried to teach him, my husband tried to teach him until we were both beyond frustrated. Finally, last Christmas we were at my parents house and I asked my dad to teach him. My dad is patient and he didn't start out frustrated like we were and he finally got it!

As a matter of fact, on Brandon's worksheet for the week, it shows they will be learning to tie shoes this week and we are to practice at home. The sad thing is, we have never shown him because all his shoes have velcro.

My solution...velcro. I'm not too concerned about Haley not learning how to tie her own shoes, but I guess we should work on it a bit.

My oldest was also helping others tie their shoes in preschool and I was proud of him for learning so quickly how to tie his shoes but know that all kids learn in their own time. So I would suggest to just keep working with your son and eventually he'll get the hang of it.

Here's something: Jimmy has one of those tying books. He's workin on it.

Criss Cross Tying Shoes
(tune: Splish Splash I was taking a Bath)

Criss Cross and go under the bridge
Then you got to pull it tight.
Make a loop but keep a long tail
That is how to do it right
Then you take the other string
and you wrap it 'round the loop
Pull it through the hole
Now you got the scoop

Criss Cross and go under the bridge (this is where you tie the loops together)
Now you made a Double Knot!
