I LOVE THIS BOOK! I could say to Alice (17 months) "Where's the duck?" And she could point him out on the page. And "Where's the cow?" "Where's the cat?" Etc. And we can do the animal...

We really liked this book, though a couple of the pictures are a little freaky. But it kept Alice's attention! (The only reason we borrowed it was because Alice's name is Alice...) And I got...

Oh yes -- the July birthday. My daughter's birthday is also in July, and I know first hand how difficult it is to plan an outside party. It's way too hot, unless you do it first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon.
Last year, we threw Jessi a Luau (sp), sort of. We set up the Limbo thingy and had a cookout with hamburgers and hot dogs, some chips, finger foods.
We bought her a Whale thingy that you hooked up to the waterhose and it sprayed water. We looked for a Slip N Slide, but opted for something simpler at the last minute. The invitations said to BYOB (bring your own bathing suit) and the kids went crazy!
We had chairs set up under the trees for the adults and tiny ones, but didn't even start the party until 4:00 in the afternoon. She had a blast and so did the other kids.
I wish we had done a pinata, but there is always this year! Hope this sparks some ideas!

A friend of ours did the same thing last summer. they had a blow up pool, a sprinkler, and a few big buckets of water balloons. They also played limbo. Haley had a blast. We did a pinata for Haleys fourth birthday last year and that worked really well also.

I think a kiddie pool and slip n slide are great ideas. Hamburgers and hot dogs, finger foods, are probably what I would cook.

My birthday is in July too! I have a few Birthday games to contribute.
1. Animal Sounds Bingo...You have to make your own bingo cards, so draw a 9 square grid on a piece of paper times how ever many guests there will be. Add a star in the center for a free spot. Fill each remaining square with a sticker from a set of 8 different animals(each card should have the same mixture). To play, each child covers the correct animal with a button or a penny, when a parent calls out the animal noise(a cow is moo). When a player has a row or collum completed they are to call out bingo.
2. Duck, Duck, Goose
3. Pin the tail on the donkey.
