How would you feel if your child's teachers were armed?

If the teachers here start packing, I'm pulling my child from the school and homeschooling. It's one thing to arm security personnel and another to arm teachers. Police officers receive a lot of special training before they are allowed on the streets with a weapon and not just instruction on how to shoot it.

Why does it always seem to be Wisconsin lately?

I don't think that teachers should be carrying guns. There are police liason officers and trained security in alot of the schools here and that would be different. My mom is a security officer for Milwaukee Public Schools and she is also a police officer, so she's had training. I think that giving untrained people fire arms in any setting is dangerous.

As both a teacher and a gun owner, um, HELL NO! First of all, I don't want that responsibility. Second of all, there's more to keeping schools safe than putting armed teachers in them. I am a firm believer in the right to arm oneself. DH has a concealed weapons permit, and I plan on getting mine. But does that mean I want to carry my gun to school? No way. It's one thing to protect myself, my family, and my home. I think that school systems should improve security, and there's obviously a lot of room for improvement.

No way. Teachers have WAY too many responsibilities to have to deal with that. They need security personnel, plain and simple.

Definitely not! I do think that the schools need to be better protected, however, I don't think a teacher should have the responsibility. How many accidental killings will there be when a teacher *thinks* that a student was getting ready to pull a gun???

The increase in school violence is alarming and needs to be taken seriously, but allowing teachers to carry weapons is NOT the answer!

That is a ridiculous idea. I'm nervous enough about my husband teaching in a high school as it is. Think of the security issues. I think a student would be much more likely to steal one of the teacher's guns then to sneak one in from home.

I also say no. I think it would be asking for a lot more problems than it would help solve.

No way! I think that's just asking for trouble.

Teachers have got enough to worry about without having to tote a gun. If I were still teaching, I wouldn't want that risk or responsibility. If they need security personnel, they get them security officers. I want the teacher to be teaching my child, not sling a pistol. Personally, I've met some teachers you wouldn't want turned loose with a gun! I wouldn't dare turn someone lose with one if they haven't been trained to use it. Can you imagine the cost for the weapons, the training, certifications, etc? And I can only imagine what would happen if they weren't properly stored and a child got ahold of one. Then, on the other hand, if you have them stored away and a kid does pull a gun on you, do you have the time to retrieve your weapon??? Probably not. I'd much rather them beef up security with qualified, trained safety staff than to put guns in the hands of people who may not be able to use them.

Apparently, you've met some of the teachers around here, Dina.

No way!! That would be too dangerous! It shouldn't be the responsibility of the teacher to carry a gun. They need to focus on teaching. Let the schools hire undercover and some uniformed guards. I still think they need a guard station at the entrance of every school lot (at least the high schools).

I know around here some schools have D.A.R.E. officers that are at the schools during the day. They get to know the students and sometimes the parents.

Nope.

For one, teachers are as susceptible to making wrong decisions as the rest of us.

Why have a gun or weapon in a school that can be taken away and used by someone who is intending to harm someone else.

No way No how. What if a kid overpowers the teacher and takes the gun? Or takes it when the teacher is not looking.
