Dilation before labor?

So exactly how much can a woman be dilated before she is actually "in labor"? I didn't dilate at all before my first 2 inductions as far as I can remember, though my cervix had softened. I don't remember being more than 1 cm when I was checked with William. Kevin and I have different memories about when I got to the hospital with William. He thought I was just 2 cm, but I remember being 4 cm. I'm really doubting that 2 cm is right because William was born less than 2 hours after I got to the hospital. However, his memory is so much better than mine usually I can't totally dismiss it.

Does anyone remember how much they had dilated before they went into labor?

I was dilated 1 cm or 2 cm, but once I went into labor, I didn't dilate past 4 cm. I have heard of women being 3 cm dilated for weeks before labor.

Thanks Tammy. Not exactly what I wanted to hear

I just found William's birth story on Baby U. It turns out I was about 5-6 cm when they first checked me at the hospital just under 2 hours before William was born. That makes me feel less worried about getting there on time.

With Rach I was 3 when I got there but had only been 1 the couple weeks beforehand. With Issac I was about 3ish for a couple weeks beforehand, and was 7 when I got to the hospital. With Ethan I was 3 a couple weeks beforehand as well.

I was 3 cm, 80% effaced and -2 station with Ryan which was 1 1/2 days before delivery. They really wanted me to wait longer but NO WAY...he was ready to fall out! So, they induced me and about 4 hrs. later Ryan was here.
