Teacher Rant

On the whole, let me say I like Brian's teacher this year better than the ones he's had in the past (specifically in Texas).

But the other day, she hands me this folder full of papers that Brian has refused to complete in class. There are over 50 sheets in there. Even at two sheets per day, that's almost a MONTH of class time. Why wait so long to let us know there was a problem?

But that's not even the worst part.

On two separate sticky notes on this folder she uses the pseudo-word "HISSELF". OMG, this woman is teaching my son English?

Did she say whether Brian could complete the work for partial credit at this point? If not, then I would contact an administrator and let that person know how the teacher handled this situation. I would also point out the use of "hisself." As a language arts teacher, I find that appalling! Of course, the bad grammar used by teachers in a professional setting never ceases to disgust me. Here on the boards, I don't usually check myself or worry about how eloquent or proper my writing is, but if I were communicating in an official capacity, I surely would!

I would be asking the teacher why on earth she waited so long to let you know that there is a problem

i would follow what Tammy said!

that is horrible that she is using 'hisself' and teaching english!

Ditto what Tammy and Andrea said. I can't believe that! And if there was a problem, why didn't she contact you before it got to this point?

I would be talking to the teacher today and finding out why she hasn't let you know before now that he isn't finishing his work. Does he do his homework with no problems? Maybe he doesn't have enough time to finish his classwork but whatever the problem, his teacher definitely should have let you know before now so you could work together to come up with a solution. If his teacher isn't helpful I would next be talking to the principal. And I would ask her about her grammar - hisself?

That is crazy!

Hisself is unacceptable. I don't know what to say about that.

I keep work that is not completed in the students' portfolios. However, if work is not completed on a regular basis I contact the parents. I do not allow work to be made up as a rule. A paper here or there but if there is problem with completing tasks in class b/c they are misbehaving or fooling around or just refusing to do it then I do not allow it to be done at home.

That said, we are required to communicate progress at mid term (our mid term reports go out next week). So maybe she was waiting until the middle of the term to contact you. That's not how I would handle it.
