What's going in your bags for the hospital?

I ran out of room with only one bag last time, so I'm packing a seperate one for Cara this time.

Her bag so far:

Going home outfit
Baby bunting
Carseat cover (the heater in our van doesn't heat up that fast and we only live a mile from the hospital, so it will be cold.)
Gas Drops
Boobie cream for sore boobies

I haven't even started packing my bag yet. Here's what I plan to pack in it:

Going home outfit (have to find my sweats)
Clean underwear
Sanitary supplies (may need something on the way home)
handcream
A book
Some movies
Boppy
Present for Kate

Chapstick because the air in the hospitals are so dry!

If you wear contact lens same there moisture drops as well.

Yes I packed a seperate bag for her and I even put stuff for Jimmy in there in case he got stuck there for any given time.

Good tips ladies, I haven't even started and I was starting to wonder what in the world I should take.

I was wondering about the contact thing...I can wear my contacts the whole time can't I? Or do I have to put my glasses on for labor? Is that a dumb question? (sorry about the )

No separate bag for the baby as it'll just be a couple outfits which are small and baby wipes for them. I've never had a problem with just taking one bag.

This is a suggestion that we use: take an empty clothes basket to put the stuff you get from the hospital in like free diaper bags, diapers, wipes, flowers, etc. Makes it easier to get it to your car and for the ride home and then getting it into your car. And a bag would do good too but a clothes basket is good for flowers and balloons that you may get while there.

Not sure I had my glasses on for delivery because I knew I would get real dry with the pushing and then I put my contacts.

I was allowed to use my cell phone and forgot my home charger so that's another thing to pack. Finger nail file I found that I broke a nail somehow and had no way to file it.

I got like 40 diapers with dd and all this other stuff. I don't know if this hospital will be that generous. Since I'm not formula feeding, I don't know if I'll get a diaper bag or not since those are giveaways from the formula companies. I'm packing the baby's stuff in a diaper bag which will be empty except for hospital give aways on the way home. I don't think I'll be getting any flowers in the hospital. Who would give them to me? I don't know a whole lot of people here and our family are not the sending flowers type. They are the sending clothes type which is fine with me.

You should get a diaper bag regardless. I always have. Formula companies give them to the hospitals to be given to ANYONE that has a baby so don't let them get away with not giving you one. The formula company hopes that you'll read their literature and use them plus what's the hospital out for giving them away? I always have them bring all they have so I can choose the one I want since I breastfeed too. I've heard they sometimes have nursing ones that don't have formula in them but extra things nursing moms would need/want but they've never had those at the hospital I give birth at. Did you get a free one last time?

I have worn my contacts for my last two deliveries. I had read somewhere though that you weren't supposed too I probably will this time too.

I will pack a bag for Payton if I ever get it made. I am so horribly behind on everything it isn't even funny.

I don't think the formula companies are doing their giveaways so much with breastfeeding moms anymore. I know when I had my glucose test done all I got was a sack of magazines and pamplets with a package of get this - six whole vitamins from Simalac. Then last week, I saw a woman get not only a bigger sack of stuff, but also three extra large cans of formula with special carrying cases just for the formula cans. I don't really see the point of a bag shaped like a can of formula that will only hold a can of formula, but they were really nice over the shoulder bags.

I understand it from the formula companies perspective. I'm not buying their product so why bother. But I was a little jealous seeing the literal armloads of stuff this lady got from the formula companies while I got six crappy vitamins and a pamplet breastfeeding. I got a couple of free magazines too, but they don't hardly count as it was two copies of the same magazine.

My six whole vitamins was a real sign to me that I will not be in the big end of the giveaways in the hospital. I'm not counting on a diaper bag when all I got was vitamins at the Women's clinic while formula feeders got a whole huge bunch of stuff. I think formula companies are cutting back on this giveaway stuff to breastfeeding mothers. I'm only counting on diapers, sanitary napkins, the nose suringe thing, a sponge and some lanolin samples and maybe some breast shields.

I nursed all 3 kiddos and got a diaper bag with each...they give one to EVERYONE.

Just a couple of comments.

You can wear contacts while you're in labor if you want to.

I didn't get any giveaways this time. No diaper bag with formula, just the pack of diapers they had been using for Elizabeth. I even asked about it and they said they didn't have them anymore.

Our hospital had a rolling cart to put all your stuff on to get it to the car. It was really helpful.

Free Enfamil bag certification

Nestle Good Start free bag certification

I couldn't find on Similacs website where you can print out a certificate for theirs so you may have to join their club to get one. I do know they have them because I've seen them though.

And I just had a baby a year ago and was obviously breastfeeding but they asked me which diaper bag I wanted. At my doctor's office, they know I breastfeed and yet they give me the same samples as everyone else gets. It has free formula as well as tips on breastfeeding. I figure I can always give the formula away to someone who needs it.

The rolling cart is helpful and we use it everytime but it helps to have the stuff in something for the car ride and for getting it into the house easily.

If you need a diaper bag, I have about 4 of those black ones that are sent from formula companies. Mike signed us up for free stuff that sent us formula and everyone got a bag. The hospital here gives you all the freebee formula stuff in a diaper bag even if you are breastfeeding. If you need one Lenora PM me your address and I'll mail it to you.

From my experiences of giving birth 4 times, I found that it is better to get a bag for Baby with nothing but the necessities in it like a going home outfit. Keep it in the trunk of your car until going home day when you can use all the extra space for the things the hospital sends home with you.
There are very few things you will need for the baby while in the hospital as it is all provided from diapers and formula to blankets and grooming supplies.

I still have a large diaperbag from Kate that has a bit more wear in it. The bag I got free last time was really small and I couldn't hardly even put her diapers in it as she got older. My heart isn't broken or anything about this, it's just a fact that I'm planning on. Dd will probably want to help, so a nice light bag of nothing but pads and diapers is just the ticket for her. Also, I was in the hospital a lot longer last time. This time I'll only be there two days.

I might not even get diapers and pads. This hospital is stingy in ways my last hospital was not. I'm not real thrilled with it, but it is convient for me. I'm bringing along pads just in case they don't even supply them while I am there.

I'm packing just one bag. I'm taking a few gowns for the baby and a coming home outfit. We live just a mile from the hospital so if I need anything I'll just have someone run out.

Right now all I have packed is:
Shampoo and conditoner samples
Toothbrush and toothpaste
mouth rinse
Lansinoh
pads
wipes
Shaving cream and razor

I'm waiting until January to pack more like the clothes.
