Well, we took on another huge project..

And of course I decide to do this right before two huge parties at my house and possibly thanksgiving as well Nothing like pressure to get the job done fast!

My front room (the living room) carpet is just nasty nasty nasty! All the carpet is original to the house (circa 1989) and to top it off that sweet, innocent, beautiful little weiner dog of mine (LILLIAN PEARL!!!!) has decided that it is MUCH better to pee and poop in the living room then going outside where her feet may get a tad cold in the grass. Seriously, the carpet was B A D and Lillian is in soooooooooo much trouble! We pulled the carpet up last night and it is much worse then we though. The subfloor will need to be heavily bleached and scrubbed by me today. Joy joy-but at least that room won't stink any more!

So, I need some help from you fine ladies We don't have the money to put in new flooring. Eventually we want to go with Pergo or something of the like since putting down more carpet won't solve the problem in the least. I was thinking for the time being of just painting the floor a dark brown or something. Do ya'll think that will work? I know that I have seen it on Trading Spaces before but I can't remember what kind of paint that they used. Also, should I put polyurathane over it when I am finished?
Help me out girls-I only have 3 days to pull this off and I am working two of them!

Kristen,

I think you should be able to pull it off, the other thing I was going to mention is that you could paint it brown and get one of those weaved area rugs and put that down so that you don't see alot of the brown. I think it would look better than NASTY carpet. You may want to test a small area first to make sure you won't need to sand the wood first and that it won't chip. Go for it!!!!!

Yeah, we will definitely be buying a rug sometime later on since it will be a loooong time before we can afford new flooring.

What kind of paint do you think that I should use? Flat?

If I were just going to paint sub-flooring I would first put a heavy coat of a primer like Kilz on it. Then I would probably try to do a textured finish, or patterned design so it looked more like an "I meant to do it" then an "I can't afford to do anything else" . I would get a good deck paint too since you are working with a wood and not a drywall or plaster, and I would use a polyurathane. The whole problem is you need to stay off the floors for a couple of days to really let the paint set....and with needing to do several coats and letting them dry completely between each coat that might not be possible.
I was in a house once that had the wood floor painted like brick.....it looked really awesome because they had a nice brick fireplace and hearth. I have also seen them done like stone and that looked good. My son's friends painted their laundry room floor in a neat marbled diamond pattern.

Good luck!!!

I would prime it with a semi gloss and use semi gloss paint if you use flat paint when you try and damp mop it the moisture will soak in just like flat painted walls.

Yep, I would definatly seal with a poly. You can get the deck sealer and that would be cheaper. I am not sure if the deck sealer comes in glossy though. I personally would want it a bit shiny.
I think you are a nutcase to try to do this before the parties. How in the world are you going to keep people off that floor? Good luck with that one.

Hmm, should I use latex then or would that just peel off too easily?

Thanks for the ideas Bridget, not sure if I will do a faux finish cuz well, I don't feel like going through all the work I do think that we should use Kilz first though. Thank goodness DH gets a discount at Lowe's !LOL!

Well, desperate times call for desperate measures Maybe our 'faux finish' will be footprints all over it!

I think they make speciality floor paints and I would go with one of them. Although your color choices might be very limited. How much do you walk in this area? I'm just thinking wall paint may wear off rather quickly and you'll have to do it over again in a couple of months. You can always go to Sherman Williams for tips and buy the actual paint at Lowes.

Yup, Johnny says to get porch paint that has the sealer already in it but the colors aren't the greatest. I will figure something out though Going to get the paint today when we pick up dh's paycheck. I think that I may go ahead and paint the walls while I am at it. Not the floor paint though, don't worry!

Well, make sure we see pictures. I would be painting with ya if I could freakin decide on a color for the dining room.

I was gonna say, with him working at Lowe's, you might just have him check around with someone that works in that department and see what they think. If you're gonna have to live with it for a while, they it has to at least be bearable. But it's not forever, either, so Just don't paint yourself into a corner.

Dina, that is what Johnny is doing at this very moment!LOL!
Omigosh girls, it is looking soooo good so far! John's mom came with us and bought us paint for the walls and we bought deck and porch paint for the floor. The floor paint is a dark chocolate brown and the walls are a slate blue. Very retro and looks awesome so far! I hope it looks great tomorrow when we see it in the sunlight! Btw, the deck and porch paint is scratch and scuff resistant and water proof so it should work really well. And it only cost $20 a gal. I will DEFINITELY make sure to take pictures Sunday morning when we get the room all put back together. Oh, and I found the PERFECT rug at Lowe's that has all our colors in it. Only $70 but it will have to wait for now. I also need to search for the perfect fabric to make curtains to match.
Gosh, if this turns out well then I will want to do the Family room next! Johnny would kill me though!LOL!
